Introduced mid-year 1989, sources differ as to how many were built (varying from 749 to 2000). Final assembly took place at ASC McLaren, where the basic GPs received a specially made 3.1L V6 engine run through a 4T60 automatic transmission with overdrive. To the iron block iron was added with 20% nickel content to improve strength and the compression ratio was lowered to 8.78:1. Forged rods were used, a strengthened crank, special oil pump, unique intakes, aluminum heads, stainless steel exhaust, factory intercooling, Y99 Rally tuned suspension, hand-applied high quality paint, and a 16.5 gal. fuel tank. The body featured aerodynamic body side skirting, functional hood louvers, and large fender wells. One served as the pace car for the Daytona 500 in 1989.
