A true original 50 year SURVIVOR! You won’t find another
one like this. 50 years ago this car started the Muscle Car revolution. This is
a very original all numbers matching, 1965 Pontiac GTO Hardtop Coupe. Has all
proper documentation from Jim Mattison of Pontiac Historical Services. There
were 55, 722 of these cars produced and only 20, 547 with tri-power. This car was
bought in St. Paul, MN originally and came to Wisconsin where I owned it back
when I was in high school.
I sold it to a friend of mine in 1974 and always
regretted letting it go. My friend had the motor rebuilt at a GM dealer in my
hometown that had guys that loved working on muscle cars back then. He also had
it painted that year with the original paint. He drove it for a few years and then sold it
to another friend who only drove it a few times during the summesr and stored
it the rest of the time. It had about 125, 000 miles on it when he bought it. It
has always been in my hometown but was never available for sale until 2003 when
I was able to finally buy it back.
I have only driven it occasionally in the summers mostly
to car shows and kept it stored the rest of the time. It has been driven about
10, 000 miles over the past 30 years. It has 135, 000 miles on it now. It has not
been in any accidents. I love this car and it is very difficult to let it go
but it’s time to let someone else enjoy this car.
Over the years I have resisted suggestions to restore
this car because it is such a nice original. I always enjoyed parking it at a
car show and watching the people coming to look at the one real “Survivor”
among all the trailer queens. I had the original window sticker when I owned it
in high school. I couldn’t find it when I sold it and had forgotten about it.
When I bought it back I began a search and finally found THE ORIGINAL WINDOW
STICKER (not a copy).
This car sold for $3, 675.36 when it was new. It has all
the things you would want that makes this car desirable and valuable including
the 389ci V8 with 360 HP, 4 Speed Close Ratio Synchromesh Transmission, Three
Two-Barrel Carburetors, FM Radio, Power Steering and Brakes, Bucket Seats, Rally Gauges, Safe-T track differential and
sport steering wheel.
The paint is a “good 20 footer” with beautiful patina.
No dents or rust. No rust on the frame. Paint has been rubbed out a few times so
the paint is getting a little thin but people love the look. It still has the
original Cragar SS Spoke Mag wheels on it that were on it when I owned it in
high school. I also have a set of the original Rally I wheels with red line
tires that would have been original equipment. It looks great with those wheels
on if you want the truly original look. The original spare tire is still in the trunk that was in
there when I owned it the first time!
The interior is all original. There is a small
separation at the seam on top of the driver’s seat. This is a simple fix that I
just haven’t gotten around to. Otherwise
the vinyl is all original and in great shape. Still has the original carpet.
Dash looks great. The headliner in the rear has a little stain which I have
shown in the pictures. It needs a new turn signal cancel switch but this is a
pretty easy fix as well. Otherwise it's ready to head down the road for hours of pleasure!
