1995-1998 911: The 993
A GREAT INVESTMENT FOR THE FUTURE
GOING THRU THE ROOF ON PRICE EVERY
YEAR!!
In model year 1995, the 911 known as
the 964 was replaced by the 911 known as the 993. The 993 is a very highly
regarded 911 and is often referred to as “The last of the air-cooled 911s”
since it was replaced by the water-cooled 996 in 1999.
IMPROVEMENTS: The 993 made fairly
significant changes to the 964 in exterior, interior and power train, retaining
only the roof and deck lid from the outgoing 964. The 993 is sometimes
considered one of the best looking of the modern 911s, trimming bulkiness out
of the 964 bumpers and styling but still with the appearance of the classic 911.
The 993 also introduced a new multilink rear suspension that improved ride
quality and general handling characteristics. A sixth gear was added to the type G50 transmission.
One of the nicest improvements to this
911 was an HVAC system that finally actually worked closer to that of a modern
car.
ENGINE: The engine in the 993 was the
same 3.6 liter used in the 964 but with the addition of hydraulic valve lifters
and lighter pistons.
The 993 has a strong following that
considers it to be one of the best 911s ever from a traditionalist’s point of
view. This is somewhat evidenced by the car's resale values which are normally
higher than those of the 996 version and often higher than some 997s.
Improvements to the reliability and usability of the 993 over earlier 911 versions
made this the easiest 911 to live with on a daily basis.
WHAT OWNERS HAVE TO SAY: PORSCHE
911-993:
I test drove dozens of Porsche's &
read a lot about all models, from early 993's, 996's, Turbo 996's and a couple
of 997's. There is nothing that compares to the style, sound, power, build
quality of the amazing 993. It is practical and fun to drive. In my opinion the
last of the air cooled Porsche was and still is the best, most stylish all
round sports car on the road. Every time I get behind the wheel I am glad I
bought the old school model, it has a style and personality that
will never be manufactured again.
By far the very best car I've ever
owned. Absolutely bullet-proof and a blast to drive.
Buy one now before the price goes up.
Keep the revs over 3, 000 rpms. My local Porsche dealership manager drives one.
This is the last of the air-cooled 911's and this car has evolved to perfection
with over 20-years of continuous engineering improvements that came from
Porsche's racing engineering history. The new 911's (997 series) are made to
look like these. Why? Because it is a mobile Object D'art. My car is 14yo and
still folks jaws drop at the gas pump and heads turn.
This is my 4th in the 911 range in my
12 years. By far the most reliable and beautiful of the air cooled
series. It's a 4th car in the family, so gets limited use these days.
Nonetheless, 15 mins in this thing, feeling every nook and cranny of the road, and feathering the throttle to keep the tail in check really, really turns a
bad day around. Yes, the folks at the office know what I spend my lunch hour if
I return in a better mood. Values are holdng well, and it'll remain a cult
classic.
My 993 is able to turn a really bad day
into something fine in about 15 minutes. There are some great freeways and
mountain roads nearby and I sometimes race motorcycles on the
twisty bends (but I lose to most of them). This is the last of the air-cooled
911s and seems to be a perfect, rugged little tank of a car. It is a third car
and I drive it only on evenings or weekends-but once in a while I use as a
daily driver when the other cars are in for repairs, and it seems fine for that
kind of use. The local dealer's service techs say that this is the best model.
Last of the air cooled 911's ('95-'98).
The sound and ride are priceless as the ad says. Looks, handling, comfort, speed - what else do you need?
This is a fun car to drive - great
pick- up at every gear. Very forgiving drive train. I prefer its styling to
that of the latest models. This is my second Porsche, and I am still waiting
for improvements in styling and reliability of the new models to replace this
one.
I've had this car for one year. It is
an absolute blast to drive. I've found the A/C works great in the south Florida
summer. The ultimate iteration of the original 911
concept. An instant classic, looks like
it's brand new. My 2 daughters love to ride in the back seat - plenty of room.
Porsche There is no substitute. This
car is absolutely amazing. Especially when you consider it's age The way this
car moves so fast and smooth puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.
It's what personifies the terms sports car.
The car has required only routine
maintenance and performs reliably and without complaint. These cars seem to be
holding their value very, very well - better than the new water-cooled 911s.
This is my fourth Porsche in fifteen
years. It is the best looking and best handling of the bunch. The air
conditioning is much better than Porsche ever offered in the past. This is the
best of the air cooled cars.
None better for DRIVING, handling.
Handmade and reliable. Much more romance and performance than the water cooled
production models of today. An incredible feel that gets better every time you
drive. This car grows on you, and makes anything else you might drive seem
silly and mundane. It truly is like a fine pair of gloves or boots, getting
better with every wear. Better than sex. Perhaps just a bit cheaper in the long
run.
Awesome car. Still a rocketship with
great handling. Excellent German quality.
Incredible speed and handling. Just a
fun car to drive. It is hard to explain until you own a Porsche how much fun
the car is to drive.
