Description:

02 Porsche 911 Rebuilt
2002 911 Cabriolet Tiptronic, 137k miles with only 5000 miles on a complete engine rebuild performed by Porsche NA, fully documented with a $23, 000 price tag!
Seal gray with gray top and interior. All components work perfectly. Two small tears in leather on inside left of passenger seat (holes for a phone mount, not visible unless seat is removed). Top is worn but no leaks or tears. Paint is as expected with 134k, no accidents, one minor dent. Painstakingly maintained at Porsche dealers exclusively. Replaced in 2010: transmission mount, oil separator. 2011: ignition coils, synchronous belt, air mass sensor, 90k mile engine service, transmission service, fuel level sensor, cam sensor seals passenger side. 2013: tires, front pads and rotors, battery, timing chains, crankcase, AS spacer shaft, piston. 2014: oil pan gasket and filter, transmission seal, deflection and tension pulley, V-belt, water pump.
Porsche’s of this vintage with this many miles are unusual especially ones with a rebuilt engine. The price reflects this unusual situation and it represents an unusual opportunity to own an amazing car with lots of life left in it for a remarkable price.
An obvious question is why am I selling it. I’ve had the car for 6 years and put 55k miles on it. I’m now 67 years old and I’m ready for a more comfortable, less expensive to maintain and more environmental friendly transportation. I would like to get more for it but the market does not seem to agree.
The story of the rebuild is this:
Driving back to Connecticut from a cross-country trip in the summer of 2013 the timing chain broke in Minneapolis. The local Porsche dealer quoted a price of 24k for a repair that would involve an almost complete rebuild. I decided it did not make sense. They reduced the price to 17k and as the car was in Minnesota with all my stuff and I was in Connecticut I decided to go ahead. At the time it had about 111k miles. Since that repair I drove the car for almost two years and put another 22k miles on it. Then I noticed that it had started to burn oil. I took it to my local Connecticut dealer who has serviced the car since I bought it. They are one of the largest Porsche dealers in the NE region and a, “Porsche Premier Dealer for 6 years in a row”. They determined that one of the cylinders was scored and Porsche NA agreed to do another rebuild under its warranty of the first rebuild. As such it was free but had I paid for it the cost would have been $23k. It is Porsche’s policy to do a particular warranty repair only once so there is no warranty on this second rebuild. The car has been driven 3, 000 miles since that rebuild and it is running beautifully.
Photos
I bought the car from a seller in Florida on eBay. While I was happy with the purchase I was disappointed that the seller had made no effort to show or describe the cosmetic negatives. I explained to the seller that I was giving him a degraded review because it is not the lowest price but the fewest surprises, which make a buyer happy. For this reason I have included the maximum photos (24) that eBay permits. The first 2/show the car in a general way and it looks great and it is a great car, however it is 14 yeas old and has 136k miles. The last 1/3 of the photos attempt to highlight flaws in its condition; chips and one slight dent, worn leather, scratched interior trim elements, scraped rims, a tired (but water tight top) etc. I will be happy to send more photos and answer any question.
This is a great opportunity to own an amazing car with an almost new engine free of the specter of IMS failure that haunts Porsche’s of this genre for a truly modest cost.
