The 2011 Porsche 911 Speedster was built as an homage to the old 356 Speedster and to celebrate the 25 years of Porsche Exclusive. Just 356 were made with less than 100 coming to the USA. It was the third 911 Speedster made, the other two being from the 930 and 964 generations.
With a distinctive double bubble tonneau cover and a windscreen that s 77mm shallower, the Speedster apes the looks of its ancestor. Mechanically, everything underneath is as per the old GTS, which means 408bhp from a 3.8-litre flat-six, and a 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds. As standard the Speedster came finished in Pure Blue - a colour available on no other Porsche - but buyers could opt for white instead.
Building on the GTS' enhanced mechanicals, the Speedster also gets the seven-speed PDK dual clutch, Sport Chrono Plus, Porsche Active Suspension Management and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes. Take it or leave it, this is the only way the Speedster comes.
Overkill, however, is part of what makes the 911 Speedster special. The door skins are lighter weight aluminum units pulled from the Turbo assembly line. The front fenders and nose are Sport Design Package pieces (also used on the 2010 911 Sport Classic), and the functional side skirts come from the GT2. The widebody rear fenders are the same as used on all-wheel-drive 911s and the windshield is 2.4-inches shorter than a standard 911.
The interior of the Speedster is nice enough you could just stare at it. Opening the door, the sill plates announce this 911's limited edition status. Each Speedster has individually numbered plaques that match the number on the dash.
