In the following paragraphs I will describe this very special 951 in excruciating detail. It is a fantastic driver quality car that is very quick, with performance equal to much more expensive Porsches. I purchased this car as a personal project, and am only selling to help finance a 996TT purchase. Needless to say if you have a 996TT and are looking for a 951, I would be happy to consider trades. Please let me know if you have any questions. I have nearly 100 high resolution photos available upon request via email.
Exterior: As you can see from the photos, this is a very nice looking 951. Stone Gray is a great color, and after a fresh clay bar, polish, and wax, the paint has a very nice deep shine. The 16” ROH wheels are period correct and fit the 951 quite well. The car has been repainted at some point in the past, and while not perfect is definitely an above average quality paint job. Good glass all around, though the windshield has a small crack in the lower LH corner. The flip up headlights pop up quickly every time, and all of the lights work correctly. The driving lights work and have nearly new lenses, no cracks.
Interior: Originally a red interior car, this car has been fully re-dyed to a black interior to update the look. I would give the interior overall a 7 out of 10, while there are small flaws to the dye job it is overall very presentable, particularly for a driver. The interior except for the dash was removed to dye the vinyl panels and carpets, the end result is quite good. Remarkably for a 951, everything works. Clock, lighter, sunroof, power windows, power mirrors, power locks, rear wiper, all lights, and the electric hatch release. The dash lights have been retrofit with blue LEDs, and the overhead light is an LED as well. A/C will quite literally freeze you out, it works amazingly well. The upgraded stereo is a huge improvement over an antiquated factory 951 system and sounds good. The odometer works, and the records show a consistent pattern of increasing mileage over time, so it is likely correct mileage. The Momo wheel is a huge improvement over the four spoke bus wheel, which is included but needs recovered. Note that the upper rear seat back is included, but not installed for pictures. I am also including a brand new black dash cover that has never been installed.
Mechanical: This is what really makes the car special. The Vitesse Stage 3 kit make this an absolute rocket, and the piggyback ECU give you the ability to get as insane as you desire. Want to run E85 and make 400+ HP? Hit the dyno and start tuning! Currently the car is tuned for a maximum of 20 psi boost which it will easily hit. Note that this is not how I drive, nor the previous owner that was also a Porsche enthusiast and PCA member. The engine starts and runs well, without any issues. Small oil leak if you leave it parked in the same spot for a few weeks, I have no investigated further. The transmission shifts smoothly without any grinding or balking, and the clutch engages without any slipping or chatter. Steering is nice and tight as is the suspension, which does a great job of balancing handling and comfort. The electric fans kick on when the car heats up and if the A/C is on, and the turbo water pump runs as it should. I drove this car home 3 hours from OK with the cruise control set at 80 MPH and the A/C keeping me nice and cool, it’s very solid mechanically.
Flaws: I believe in full disclosure when selling cars, and will do my absolute best to describe the flaws. I am a very particular engineer and tend to over-describe flaws, most of these are very slight. Exterior: moderate rock chips up front, crazing on the rear fender rock guards, a few small shallow dings without paint damage that won’t show up in photos. Interior: small flaws from the re-dye, sunroof will tilt but the arms will not retract for removal, cruise control only works about 50% of the time, seat leather condition under covers is below average, standard 944 dash cracks (brand new dash cover included), passenger seat is very stubborn to slide. Mechanical: small oil leak, sight pull at highway speeds (alignment).
Summary: Overall this is a really nice example of a 951 with some excellent upgrades. The car as-is would be a really fun driver or autocross/DE car. Or tear out the interior, add a roll cage and seats, and go chase embarrass some much newer and more expensive Porsches. I have sorted out a significant number of small issues, but find myself wanting a 996TT. Please let me know if you have any questions, or would like more photos. Clean title in hand. Also included is the rear seat back that is not installed, a new dash cover, the original owner’s manual and pouch, the rear cargo cover, tool kit, jack, spare tire, original steering wheel, tuning laptop, and a number of extra 944 parts.
