Beautiful 1964 Renault Dauphine. Exceptionally fun to drive. I would love to keep the car but I live in a condo and I need the space for my fiancee's car.
Car is tight and peppy shifts and runs very well. Powered by 845 CC engine that produces 32 horsepower. You would be very proud to drive this anywhere including classic auto show. It may not win best in show due to a poor paint job applied by the previous owner. Spray was too heavy so it looks a little thick in places. I have not tried buffing so that may be an option. The paint grade is only noticeable from 2-4 feet and I am also very critical when it comes to repaint jobs. Any further away and it looks awesome. Lower than excellent paint job is reflected in the reserve price.
Interior is in excellent condition. No tears or severely worn areas. Headliner is very good. There is some light evidence of ovespray in a few areas, again due to crappy painter. Steering has a few smalls cracks but nothing that is aggravating to the feel when driving. The clear plastic speedo cover is slightly faded. Seat belts, visors and domes lights are non-original replacements. All defects noted are visible in the pics.
Engine area and trunk are very clean as is undercarriage. Rubber around front and rear windshields is surprisingly clean.
Bumpers and air grills were painted. At first that bothered me so I was planning on sending them to be stripped and rechromed but within a short period of time after buying the car it no longer annoyed me. All other chrome is veritable and in good condition. There is some pitting on the chrome around the window vents. Everything works including windshield washer, 2 speed heater motor and dual city/country horn. There is a cheap radio that I rarely listened to. If I were to keep the car I would search for an original radio to install.
I bought it to drive around for the fall and spring and had my favorite european car mechanic do extensive mechanical work during the winter months ( free storage ! ). Among other things, the following was rebuilt or replaced:
Clutch, entire suspension including upper and lower arms, trail arms, stabilizer links and bushings, king pin. water pump, flywheel, engine and trans mounts, starter. Engine was found in excellent condition so only a tune was required. There was evidence that the engine was rebuilt recently when we opened it up. I kept all receipts for work performed and you are welcome to contact Eurpoean Auto in Chicago to inquire about any of the work performed.
The car starts right up, cold idles and comes down properly onced warmed up. Engine sounds and performs GREAT. Good pick up, smooth shifting with synchromesh in first gear, which was introduced in the 1961 model. Car keeps up with city traffic with good acceleration and can cruise at 60-65mph on the highway without any shake.
This is trully a very fun and reliable car to drive.
