DETAILS-THIS PARTICULAR PORSCHE SPEEDSTER REPLICA
Over the years since the Porsche Speedster's heyday in the mid to late 1950's, many firms have produced replicas or recreations of this iconic model. Many avid enthusiasts share the view that none exceed the quality of the replica by Vintage Speedsters of Hawaiian Gardens, California. This particular car was assembled by Vintage in July 2006 for a Southern California owner. Since that time, to say that the car's particular owner has babied the car would be a dramatic understatement. It has been driven under 1, 300 miles and has received the benefit of some wonderful cosmetic enhancements and recent, costly mechanical improvements.
The Speedster is licensed and titled in California as a Volkswagen (as was properly and legally done by Vintage Speedster Co.) carrying the correct and verified VIN 118964904, the VIN of the donor VW floor pan. This number is clearly visible on the top of the transmission tunnel toward the rear of the interior (under a carpet flap) for easy DMV inspection.
DESIGN / CONSTRUCTION OF THE VINTAGE SPEEDSTERS CARS
Manufacture of Speedster replicas began in the 1970's. Early manufacturers used a shortened VW floor pan and did not adequately reinforce the body. This led to the infamous jack test where, when lifted with a jack, the body flex would lead to the doors no longer closing properly. Vintage Speedsters engineered a new type of structure starting with their first Speedster produced in 1988.
Vintage uses a custom built, jig-welded, 2x4 inch, 11-gauge steel frame. An original VW floor pan is restored, shortened and welded to the new steel skeleton. The rigid new structure retains the original VW pan design and integrates the largest frame possible. All Vintage Speedsters easily pass the jack test. In addition, the steering wheel is offset ever so slightly, just as found in the original Speedster.
Vintage Speedsters has hand built over 3000 Speedsters as of 2013 and builds more than 90% of the Speedsters being sold today.
Vintage Speedsters are registered as VW's with the year matching that of the VW donor pan. This particular car is legally titled and registered in California and is exempt from California's stringent smog testing. As a result of the way the car is titled it is our experience that it can be licensed in virtually every state / country either due to the age of the car (over 25 years of age) or as a result of the title reflecting that it is built as a 1969 VW. We have owned and represented a large number of Speedsters, 550's and 356 recreations and are not only extremely impressed with the quality of the Vintage Speedster but the performance, reliability, comfort and overall livability of this particular car. Simply stated, it is the nicest example that we can remember owning over the course of 20+ years in business.
While some of the cars are rather bare bones with small displacements engines, drum brakes and a lack of trim options, this car is just the opposite and is loaded with desirable upgrades. A review of the Speedsters Window Sticker (original invoice) and added options support the items that have been added to give it a more authentic appearance and, most important, make it safer, faster and more reliable than an original Porsche Speedster.
