OVERVIEW:
Selling my 1978 Saab 99 GL hatchback coupe, this car is a driver with a solid 2.0L engine, upgraded springs and KYB shocks, recent paint and vintage Enkei wheels. It's upgraded with aftermarket exhaust and performance muffler, and optional equipment ordered on this car included power steering, fuel injection, and the automatic trans. The odometer now reads 31, 383 miles, but odometer is not currently working since I've purchased it. true miles is unknown. The car is located in Arcadia, California and received a tune-up, oil change and new battery four months ago.
The paint is in good condition, a darker green color similar to Saab’s Acacia Green with a few minor scratches. The 15×7 Enkei aloys are wrapped with Michelin Primacy MXV4 tires with about 80% tread remaining. The gold Saab emblem in the grille is new. The stock amber front turn signals have been swapped out with white Euro units. The custom-ordered Swedish front plate number matches the rear California plate. The paint was reportedly done about 3-4 years ago. There are some very minor surface rust in the undercarriage shown in the gallery photos, along with a quarter-size dent in the hood and some air bubbles between the front lower windshield.
SUSPENSION/ RIDE QUALITY:
The upgraded suspension drops gives the car a stock height, and the ride is very smooth and not harsh over bumps. The car performs well, the acceleration is responsive, the power steering is light and the car handles great and tracks straight, cruises at freeway speeds at ease. The brakes feel firm and stop well, but rear rotors squeak at parking-lot speeds and could use a tune up. The handbrake will need adjusting, as the handle pulls all the way up, but it does hold, also the front break lines have been upgrades with stainless braided lines.
INTERIOR:
The interior is all original and in good condition. The dash is perfect with no cracks and almost no wear on the plastic center console parts and door panels, trims and seat upholstery and vinyl seat backing are all in good condition with no rips, but the driver’s seat cushion could be restuffed as it’s not very supportive anymore; the headliner is also starting to sag. The top corner of the rear seat on the left side needs repair , as can be seen in the photo gallery. Inside the rear hatch, the vinyl covering on the seat backing and hatch panel has apparently been reupholstered,
The odometer does not work and has been at 31, 383 miles since I've purchased the car one year ago. Other gauges, instruments, interior/exterior lighting and the original analog clock are all in working order, as are switches, latches and locks. This model doesn't come with A/C or stereo. (only natural heated air)
ENGINE/TRANSMISSION/ DRIVEABILITY:
The 2.0L SOHC inline 4 cylinder in stock trim is rated at about 100hp. The factory exhaust manifold on this car feeds an aftermarket exhaust and performance muffler, which gives the car a very nice tone. There is a small leaking coming from the driver side drive axle that has left only about 10 dime-sized drips of red fluid over the last 3-week period. A worn motor mount produces a slight thump when shifting into drive from a stop. ( the above issue was reported by my mechanic during the inspection prior to my purchase) The automatic transmission shifts smoothly. Original brown paint can be seen in the engine bay, which is also found under the carpets in the rear hatch and under the seats.
The underside is solid, with only a few areas of corrosion and surface rust (shown in the photo gallery), including a 1″ area in the lower side rear with surface rust that hasn’t perforated through. Fuel hoses, fuel tank have all gone through, repaired and updated by the previous owner. The aftermarket springs are paired with KYB shocks on all four corners.
This car was featured in a 6-page article in “Car Owners Magazine, ” a publication from China. A copy of the Aug 2015 article will be provided.
Included in the sale is 3 keys and a Saab service manual. There is no owner’s manual or prior maintenance records or history. Recent work includes new spark plugs, radiator-fan repairs, as well as a new battery and oil change. The car is being sold with a California title and a smog certificate will be provided to a California buyer.
