Offered is a Saturn custom Electric Vehicle. Converted from a 1997 SL2 chassis a few years ago. 144V lead-acid battery pack is 2 years old. Clear IN title. I used this Saturn as a test platform for EV experimentation. What attracted me to it was the excellent instrumentation and neat, professional looking job done in the conversion. Would like to keep it but I need the dough. So, my loss is your gain - the car is being sold with a low starting price and no reserve.
The E-motor is a Netgain Impulse 9 series wound D.C. Motor. Controller is a Kelly 800 Amp configurable via a laptop. Electric vacuum pump for brake booster. DC to DC converter ( replaces an alternator ). Suspension and brakes upgraded. Battery boxes vented to the outside via an electric fan. Built in battery charger from Quick Charge which plugs into a standard 110 volt 20 Amp outlet. 5-speed transmission for testing torque/power in different E-Motor RPM ranges.
144 volt nominal battery pack made up of 24 batteries at 6 volts each. Batteries are Interstate GC2-XHD-UTL, heavy duty deep cycle, 232AH each for a total 33.4 KWH battery pack, although I only discharge the pack to 50% +/- each cycle. When batteries were new, range was around 40-50 miles to 50% state-of-charge, depending on how car was driven. Now range is around half that. Capable of 65 MPH, though it likes to cruise in the 50-60 MPH range and around town.
Pack Amps displayed on instrument cluster. All other instrumentation displayed on Bluetooth device paired to your android phone or tablet ( includes Pack Volts, Amps, State of Charge, Cumulative Watts per Mile, Battery Temperature, Instantaneous Power, plus more). Vehicle was purchased from the west coast so it has not been subjected to salt. So, car is rust-free and in my opinion in excellent condition inside and out. Included with this sale: Extra set of factory springs, front fender, mirror, power steering rack and power steering pump. Paint is good, with minor scratches consistent with a car of this age. There is a small crack in front left fender and mirror mount. Replacement fender and mirror were included in the package when I bought the car. I did not replace the ones on the car because the cracks noted were not very noticeable and did not bother me at all. But the replacement parts are still included in my sale if you want to make the car more perfect. There is also a thick stack of folders containing technical information on the electric system, wiring diagrams, manuals, etc.
Other flaws I know of: Supposed to be a heater but it will not turn on right now, only the fan. Speedometer needle jumps when its cold. Rarely while driving, the motor power stops feeding during frequent gear shifting. This condition is cleared by quickly clicking the key off and on again once.
I have more than $7K in the car, considering the platform, electric components, instrumentation, and a whole brand-new set of batteries installed almost 2 years ago. Need to get whatever it fetches. So am taking a risk and selling it with no reserve and low starting price. For this reason, bidders please note, the car is offered AS-IS with no warranties or returns.
