Until two years ago, Mazda was essentially the sole player in the segment that it innovated, as potential competitors entered the scene and quickly died off.
Then, about two years ago, it was time for a serious disruption. Enter Scion, known for producing inexpensive city cars based on popular Toyota models. Yet the youth-targeted brand had no track record in sports cars, such as the FR-S coupe.
The car’s intent is eerily similar to Mazda’s: Bring a sporty, rear-wheel-drive compact car to market, and let it be a solid platform for tuners, racers, and customizers. But rather than feature a 'Fast and Furious' motif of huge spoilers and body kits, the FR-S coupe – which is smaller than a Ford Mustang but larger than the Miata – comes modestly dressed.
But that’s totally okay. Near-anonymity is part of the recipe for creating possibly the best, most understated sports car that you probably never noticed until now. A key ingredient is the FR-S’s engine: a 2.0-liter, 200-horsepower four-cylinder which was co-developed with Subaru.
The motor is punchy and eager to rev, and sounds most satisfied when it’s zinging the tach needle close to redline. This flat-4 engine is naturally aspirated, which means it goes about without turbocharging or supercharging assists.
The flat-4 layout of the FR-S engine helps lower the car's center of gravity. This makes the Scion extremely nimble and fun to toss around corners.
For what it lacks in sheer power, the FR-S compensates handily with a nice growl and the fun-loving enthusiasm of a scrappy little puppy. The FR-S is made even more engaging by virtue of a slick, 6-speed manual transmission, which is standard equipment.
This gearbox's short throws and forgiving clutch should be a blueprint in the ‘how to make a manual transmission feel fantastic’ automotive rulebook. Fuel economy improves slightly with the optional 6-speed automatic, however. The automatic offers rev-matched downshifts and can hardly be considered a dull alternative.
The final pieces of the equation revolve around an able chassis that inspires you to look for excuses to go out in the FR-S for needlessly long drives. Every cruise suddenly feels like a track day in this car
The steering is delightfully accurate: Turn into a corner, and you can point the FR-S exactly where you want it to go! Unless you’d prefer to kick out the tail and drift a bit, a behavior we can neither condone (on public roads) nor condemn (on the track).
The ride can be too firm at times, and it might not make the best road-trip car. Some blame is due the car’s minimal sound deadening and the buzziness coming from the energized engine’s exhaust.
