Factory Five Cobra Replica - S/N FFR1005X
This auction is for the third Factory Five Racing Cobra ever built, and the final pre-production prototype in the Mk1 series, S/N FFR1005X, X denoting a prototype. Dave Smith, the president of Factory Five Racing, told me that S/N's 001 and 002 were test chassis that were never completed explaining why #005 is the third car. To date FFR has sold something like 10, 000 “Cobra” kits since mine was born. I bought the car from the Smith brothers in 1995, back when they were two of the three employees at FFR and operating out of a little garage space in South Dartmouth, MA. The Smith brothers personally built the car and it's one of the two cars that were used for all of the early magazine articles, promo tours and early brochure photography. It's also the first ever FFR Cobra with a Kenne Bell Supercharger. I installed the blower and wrote the installation manual for FFR as a condition of my purchasing the car. Kit Car magazine ran a feature article on the blower installation featuring this car. In the under hood pictures you'll see the original engineering drawing numbers painted on various frame parts. You see those same numbers again in the first generation assembly manual which used this car as the model for all the pictures. It looks today as it looked the day it left the factory in 1995, it even has the same tires on it!. That's just the highlights of the car's history. As an added bonus, the car is titled and registered as a 1965 Shelby.
This car is an important piece of Factory Five history and may well be the earliest surviving Factory Five Cobra…

A Cobra is all about stunning performance and a spectacular driving experience. Built as a true no-frills driver’s car, this example is absolutely thrilling to drive and guaranteed to put a big grin on your face. The car idles with an aggressive lope and a menacing supercharger whine that sounds positively fierce under power. The no-lag supercharger performance and lightweight aluminum flywheel provide instantaneous acceleration. The car is very light weight with an impressive power-to-weight ratio, instant torque at all rpm, plenty of horsepower to scare yourself, and excellent handling and braking. Want more power? A simple supercharger pulley change will increase the boost pressure adding more horsepower and torque, not that it needs it. The current tune is conservative and stone reliable with excellent drivability, capable of excellent touring mileage if you can stay out of the throttle.
As you can see in the photos, the paint is in truly excellent condition. The car has been driven so there are some minor flaws. There are “rock pecks” on the lower portion of the nose, in the area of the brake ducts and oil cooler opening. Nothing severe but you can see them if you look, check them out in the pictures. There is a small (approximately dime-sized) discoloration in the paint above the right hand headlight. There is a barely visible crack in the clear coat between the left headlight and the hood. This was the result of a “not-so-bright” magazine photographer resting his knee there to take promo shots back in 1995. Neither the discoloration nor the crack in the clear coat would show up in a photo. When the windshield and frame was originally installed by the Smith brothers back in 1995 they scratched the cowl just below the windshield frame. They fixed it but it is visible.
The interior is in excellent condition. The leather on the seats is supple and the carpets are in excellent condition. There is one worn spot in the carpet beside the clutch pedal where your left foot rests. Both doors have vinyl map pockets for storage of small items. There’s plenty of room in the trunk for a weekend trip for two plus the custom cover and the fitted tonneau cover. You can put a small cooler in the trunk and close the deck lid with no problem.
I’ve owned this car since new, just short of 20 years, and it is a very well-sorted, reliable, trouble free example of the original Factory Five Racing Cobra concept. I’ve driven it over 20, 000 miles and loved every one of them. I have extensive files on the car from day one and being the original owner, I know every detail about its history. My reserve price is far below what it would cost for the kit, all the hard parts, and paint to build this car yourself, not even considering the hundreds of hours to complete the assembly and body work.
In-person inspections are welcomed.
Shipping arrangements are the buyer’s responsibility. A $1, 000 non-refundable deposit via certified check or bank wire transfer is due within 48 hours of the auction ending. The balance is due within five business days via certified check drawn on a major nationwide bank or bank wire transfer.
Thank you for your interest and I look forward to your inquiries.
*** Serious bidders only please. Please, no scams. If you are new to eBay and do not have history as a buyer you will need to contact me or I may reject your bid. The car is for sale locally and I reserve the right to end the auction early.
