Model Overview
The 2013 Smart fortwo Electric Drive utilizes an electric motor mounted in the same location as the gasoline engine on standard fortwos. The electric motor is powered by a 17.6-kW-hr lithium-ion battery and produces 47 horsepower and 95 ft-lb of always-on torque. A single-gear automatic completes the powertrain package, and the result is nearly 90 miles on a single charge, with a real-world miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) of 122 MPGe city and 93 MPGe on the highway. The Smart can be recharged from completely drained to fully charged in six hours when using a 240-volt outlet, while a 110-volt outlet will require extra time.Electric fortwos contain the same safety features seen in gasoline versions, including Smart's tridion safety cell, eight airbags, electronic stability control and crumple zones meant to absorb the force of an impact. The Electric Drive offers halogen headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a stereo with USB inputs, manually adjustable seating and more, as well as two gauges placed on top of the dash, which track battery charge level and power being generated by the electric motor. The Electric Drive features brake regeneration, which captures power created during braking and coasting and utilizes it to add up to 30 kW-hr into the battery.
