Brand new 2002 Chassis was used for the build. ..Originally Smart Fortwo Glider, (Imported without motor or transmission) that was importedin 2002 two to be converted to electric. Importer went bust and all imported gliders went to auction. I purchased Feb of 2013 from an enthusiast who had 1 of his 3 gliders left from when he purchased at auction. Car was completed August of 2014.
Professionally conceived and developed with UNDERGROUND AUTOSPORT in Hoffman Estates Illinois.We used Sinister Sand Sports Kit B to start with. .which includesBillet Aluminum a-arms, hubs, heirs, motor mount plates, subframe, bearing carriers, bearing, Seals, stubs, disc brakes, calipers, ATB differential, differential mounting plates and bearings, Fox coil over shocks, as well as the cv/axle kit consisting of 930 Porsche cv's with axle, clips, Boots, flanges, bolts, air box, (4) sprockets clutch pedal assembly, throttle bottle assembly, shifter handle assembly and cables, 2 chains, clutch and brake lines. Motor driven reversewhich includes reverse unit cable Clovis and shifter arm.
The new much wider rear end and suspension makes this a very smooth and stable driver. The width of the rear end went from 5' to approximately 5'9 and adds a whole new look to the vehicle. After several attempts by several fiberglass fabricators to design and fit wheel wells, I was fortunate enough to discover a true artisan in customizing auto body parts. ..Body Works of Chicago with many thanks to Angelo and his crew. ..I had many moch ups made prior to discovering Body Works. The mechanicals were done at Underground Autosport. Their directive was to use as much of the Hayabusa Motor Bike as possible in the marriage of both car and bike. This includes not just the motor and tranny but also gas cap and the complete replacement of the instrument cluster that also came off the BUSA.
Before we mounted the motor. ..I thought it would be a good idea to powder coat the new sub-frame. .we decided to go with the same color as the body panels of the car. The effect is really striking looking from the rear of the car.
The 2002 Hayabusa was purchased several months after the purchase of the Glider from a motorcycle dealer, with only 3200 miles on the odometer S M A R T A C U S now has just over 4000 miles on the odometer. So approximately 800 miles driven since completed a little over a year ago.
This car has been the best marriage of bike and car that I have personally seen. It has a seamless look of a factory car and everything on it looks like it belongs. I can't drive S M A R T A C U S with out being asked to pull over and have people literally gawk at it. Although the car is usually heard before it is seen with 2 Moto Guzzi mufflers beautifully tuned to a rip roaring sound. To finish off the car I needed wheels that would fit right in. So I Imported a set of German LORINSER Wheels with brand new Yokahama S Drive tires ( F 195 40 17s &. R 215 35 17 ).To protect wheel rims I also installed a nice set of Red Rimzz that truly just add to the effect of the car.
