Do you like fins?
It's heartbreaking to have to sell
my first car
.
My dad bought this car in 1961 and sold it to me when I turned 16 in 1968.
I have a lot of fond memories of the fun I've had with my girlfriend (who's been my wife since 1973)!
But we're downsizing now, and so we would like to see it go to a good home, get some TLC, and get driven to car shows and cruise nights.
This is a 2-door coupe (58H-C3 body) with an automatic transmission and Twin Traction rear.
The car suffered some bad rust in the quarter panels and rocker panels, so I had all that repaired in 1978 (the shop cut out the rust and welded in aluminum - advanced for its day).
The car was originally brown and pink (!) but as a young man I wanted something more contemporary, so I had it repainted in the popular Golden Hawk color scheme of gold with white in the fins and on the wheels.
The extra feature of white with a black stripe on the hood was suggested by my dad.
Most of the chrome is good, some has been redone.
The engine is the original Studebaker 289 V8 (the same engine as the Golden Hawk); it starts every time and the dual exhaust sounds really great.
The car is drivable but it could use some mechanical work.
The starter always works but it is worn.
The transmission shifts slowly when cold and often buzzes in reverse.
The engine does burn some oil (a common Studebaker trait).
There is some surface rust on the frame.
The interior was completely redone about 20 years ago in a tasteful tan and brown, using the original panels and design.
The headliner, seats, carpet, and doors were all redone, and we had seat belts added and the front floor pans repaired.
The car has Coker reproduction wide whitewall tires that have less than about 400 miles.
I have some extra parts that can go with the car: service manuals, bumper, grille, wheels, supercharger (not complete).
The car has been garaged for most of its 57 years, a member of the family for 54, and mine (ours) since 1968.
I hope to pass it on to someone who can care for and enjoy it.
