Studebaker automobiles have long been favorites of classic car enthusiasts. The most show stopping, dramatically low and long, the public couldn’t get enough of them and demand outstripped production.
Introduced in 1953, Loewy's wonderful coupes would influence car design the world over. For 1954 changes were limited to minor trim changes. The car is powered by a Studebaker-built V-8 motor coupled to a three-speed transmission with overdrive. Designed in the tradition of Raymond Loewy, the 1954 Commander hardtop was arguably the best design of the early 50's. In fact, the style was so terrific that the New York School of Fashion presented its Gold Medal to Studebaker and the design continues to win design awards after half a century as being one of the top 15 designs of all time. This was the year Studebaker became Studebaker-Packard with total production of about 68, 000 cars with the hope of a new design offering. Because of their appealing design many of these cars have been customized and re-powered into magnificent hot rods. Thus original Commanders are rarely found in any condition and almost never in this condition. They sold new just over $2, 000, which, in today’s market would just cover some engine parts.
The 1954 Commander Coupe came in the 3 trims 2-door coupe, Starliner and Starlight the Starliner was only available in a Regal Sub-model the coupe and starlight came in both Regal and Deluxe Sub-models.
