2002 Subaru WRX Wagon
I am selling my 2002 Subaru WRX Wagon. It is a silver wagon
with 130k miles. The car is completely stock except for the front suspension.
The interior and exterior are both in better than average condition for a 13
year old car. The car has never been in an accident or a flood.
I bought the car 2 years ago with 73k miles, because the car
had a clean carfax, and was Subaru dealer maintained. I used this car as a
commuter car and had no intentions to modify or race it. My goal was to keep it stock, and only
slightly improve anything that may have broken. However, the issues have begun
to pile on in the past 6 months.
The bad:
The main reason I am selling it is that the
engine has no compression on cylinder 2 and will either need a teardown/rebuild
or replacement. I did not have it diagnosed beyond that, as I was not willing
to make that investment at this time. The car will also need a new radiator. It has a
slight leak from somewhere on the core that is not enough to leave a puddle, but you can see the coolant on the splash guard and smell it when idling after
a few minutes. The radiator was replaced at approx. 100k in Dec of 2013, but
went out again the following year. My intention was to replace it with an
aluminum Mishimoto unit, but the engine started having problems before I could.
The good:
The front suspension was upgraded at approx.
122k miles to a 93-01 STi setup with aluminum control arms, sedan sway bar, bushings, new sway bar links, new ball joints, and new tie rod ends. At this
time, I also replaced the wheel bearings, axles, brake pads and rotors. The
sway bar, knuckles, and calipers were painted to prevent rust. The car also had
a 4 wheel alignment performed immediately after installation. The turbo spools up and boosts fine, with no
noise or issues. The transmission has no issues. There is no
slippage in the clutch. At approx. 122k miles the transmission was drained and
re-filled with the WRX “cocktail” gear oil mixture as a preventative measure, as typically the transmission is the weak spot on these cars. While the car was in my possession, I changed
the oil every 3-4k miles with Castrol Edge Synthetic oil and Purolator Pure One
filters. The battery was replaced in November 2014. Within the last 2 months, the O2 sensor was
replaced with a Subaru spec Denso unit, the plugs were replaced with NGK
platinums, and the coil pack for cylinder 2 was replaced. The air filter was
replaced within the past month as well. The timing belt, water pump, thermostat, and
thermostat housing were replaced at 108k, approximately 1 year ago. The remainder of the car is stock. The interior
is in terrific condition, and completely stock, with the stock in dash 6 CD
changer that still functions perfectly. I relocated the stock subwoofer from
under the passenger seat to be under the driver seat. The car has Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3 tires that
have just under half of their treadwear left. There is no rust on the undercarriage, the car
is clean and well maintained all around.
Believe me when I say that you don’t find many of these, especially wagons, in stock form, and good condition. It took me a few years of
searching to find this one, and I am sad to see it go. I wish I could afford to
repair it, but unfortunately I cannot and I have to let it go.
This car would be an excellent contender as a platform for
building a complete STi swap/conversion. Or if willing to rebuild/replace the
engine, keep as a stock specimen.
Along with the car I will include the following extra parts:
1 extra 16x6 5 spoke rim that has a very slight
bend. It still holds air fine, but even after a balance there is a slight
vibration. Would make an excellent full size spare.1 set of blue silicone upper/lower radiator
hoses.Original sway bar. (the car currently has the
sedan sway bar which is a few mm wider, to match the STi control arms)New Purolator fuel filter.5 quarts of Castrol Edge Synthetic and Purolator
Pure One Filter.1 container of Subaru Coolant additive (intended
to prevent head gasket damage)Original center dash vents. I replaced the
original with a 2004-2006 piece and devised a mount for a suction cup cell
phone holder. But I saved the original part to allow reverting it back.Original lug nuts that were taken off to allow
the installation of the wheel locks.
Car is located in Cliffwood Beach, NJ 07735. Local pickup only.
