They have the mystique and magic of objects that time has somehow forgotten. You won't hear about the extensive restoration, it hasn't occurred. Like an enigma that has somehow turned back the hands of time, lovingly cared for or, in some cases, sparingly reserved for special occasions. Survivors are experiencing a new found appreciation among auto enthusiasts. Survivors may not be perfect, yet that is, in many cases, what makes them perfect.
This 1980 Land Cruiser FJ40 is a time capsule. She is offered on consignment by Land Cruiser Nation. I can attest to the fact that this truck is rare
in more ways than one! Toyota sold very few FJ40's in the US market from 1980 to 1983. Toyota's new and larger FJ60 wagon was introduced in 1981 and outpaced the FJ40 in sales. This FJ40 has never been apart. The top has never been removed, the original paint still gleams. She has factory power steering and air conditioning which is seldom seen. The body and frame are free of rust. To find an FJ40 in this condition and with these options is remarkable.
Anyone can write a check to restore something but it’s never quite the same. You can't duplicate the nuances of what occurs at the factory. There are those of us that place the greatest value on these original “survivors”. If you are one of these people, you will appreciate this Mustard Yellow 1980 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. There have been no attempts to refurbish this FJ40. What you see here is an original well preserved truck that has been carefully preserved for 35 years. You can see every spot weld on this truck and she has all the glory of a preservation class FJ40. You can see exactly what you're getting here. She runs great and has been well maintained, pull the choke, turn the key and she bursts to life.
Details & Condition
There's a good reason this truck has only 35, 200 miles. She was originally purchased by G. Okada of Honolulu, HI on 7/16/1980. I sold this truck for Mr. Okada in 2013. This FJ40 spent 33 years on Oahu before moving to Arizona in 2013. Oahu is not a very big place so it's not uncommon for vehicles to have low miles. She’s in excellent original condition and wearing her original paint. There are no dents, dings or damage to the body and no rust. The interior is flawless as well. The color is the original Toyota Mustard Yellow (paint code 532).
The top has never been off. The original 2F motor & drivetrain are barely broken in. The original seats, radio, mats, headliner, dash pad are all in excellent condition. A true survivor that was rustproofed when new, always garage kept and has remained free of rust. The photos show some black material bordering some of the body crevices on the truck. This material was part of the rustproofing and may have been clear when it was applied. It can be easily removed.
Power steering, clutch, 2WD and 4WD transmission and transfer case are in excellent working order. The Toyota 2F inline six cylinder retains much of the original emission/smog equipment and anything that was removed was saved and is included. This FJ40's body, undercarriage and frame are exactly what you would expect from a lightly used original and in excellent condition. The suspension consists of rugged solid axles and leaf springs, shackles and matching coil over shock absorbers at both ends. At the back of the truck's frame you will find bumperettes flanking a hitch for light towing. Front disc and rear drum brake combination will bring all you to a quick and uneventful stop. Toyota factory steering makes driving this FJ40 effortless. The tall 3.70 gears serve up an awesome combination of civilized on road performance and off-roading prowess. Under it all you will find 15 inch white spoke rims with WARN locking hubs surrounded by new 31x10.5 Goodyear Wrangler All Season tires and Warn hubs. Hanging on the swing out rear tire carrier is the original Bridgestone spare tire on the original wheel with hubcap. Four original wheels and hubcaps and two additional original tires are included with the truck.
What is not original are the white spoke wheels, the Holly carburetor and the rubber fender flares. Please note that she comes with her original gray steel wheels & hubcaps, the original OEM carburetor & air cleaner assembly. The fender flares are attached from under the wheel wells and can be easily removed with no visible holes drilled in the sides of the fenders. The speaker boxes in back are connected to the original radio and not bolted in. Anything that was altered in the process was kept and these parts will ship with the truck.
EVERYTHING works as it should. The A/C blows cold and heater works well, turn signals, hazards, headlight high and low beams, wipers, windshield washer, taillights, backup lights, license plate lights, odometer, speedometer, fuel, oil, amp and temp gauges all function. The seats have original upholstery in great shape. The headliner is excellent and original.
Late Model FJ40's
Toyota discontinued the FJ40 in the United States in 1983. There were not many FJ40’s delivered to the US in the 1980's, so finding an 80's FJ40 in any condition is rare. Many have since been parted out, modified, or have simple rusted away. Even fewer FJ40’s were delivered with factory power steering and/or factory air conditioning. The trucks that remain in good condition with both options are Uber-rare!
Besides the fact that there are very few of these FJ40’s available, the 80's model years offer many factors that make them the best all around FJ40's Toyota ever built, and the most coveted.
These enhancements were evolutionary. In 1975 with ambulance doors replacing the old lift gate & barn doors. In 1976, USA trucks were upgraded to front disc brakes with four-piston calipers. 1977 added wing windows in back and a new and improved tubular spare tire carrier. By 1979 Toyota went to 3:70 gears, which gave the FJ40 better highway speed than earlier 4:11 gear ratio models. The fuel tank was relocated from under the passenger seat to a safer location underneath the vehicle that allowed for an increased from 16 to 21.6 gallons. The seats became reclining, the jump seats were given metal U-shaped legs for added support. Trucks delivered to colder climates were equipped with side window defrosters. In August of 1980 we saw the change to the split transfer case and updated four-speed transmission, which was quieter than it’s predecessor. The emergency brake design was updated using cables to actuate the rear drum brakes vs. the earlier models, which deployed a drum that sat behind the transfer case. In 1981, the steering wheel was re-designed with a more modern look. The center console, which was a simple metal and then plastic box, was upgraded with an ashtray and integrated rear heater. In 1982 the odometer was upgraded from five digits to six-digits. The cabin courtesy light came on when the doors are opened. Finally in 1983 the dash underwent a minor redesign to allow for easier serviceability.
FJ40's built in the 1980's have become highly sought after. They are not only in extremely short supply but also deliver more refinements than any Land Cruiser that Toyota built in the preceding years. The values throughout the last two decades have shown that the late model FJ40's are one of the best possible investments on four wheels. Every year they rise in value, on a trajectory unique in the classic car and 4x4 market.
Summary
This Land Cruiser has been well cared for over the years. Other than described, this is an unmolested, factory-original FJ40 in remarkable condition for its age. The odometer currently reads 35, 200 miles. The truck exudes survivor status. Driven an average of 1000 miles a year, she’s now waiting for the next adventure!
