I am sadly parting with my venerable Toyota Matrix, which has seen me around the country over the last eight-plus years. I am the second owner. The car has never been scrapped/flooded/etc and is still extremely reliable. Would make a fantastic first car, or a very practical vehicle if you're looking to travel.
Positives on this car:
-Ultra-reliable. The only mechanical failure I've experienced in 8 years of owning it was the failure of a brake caliper. -Very fun to drive. This is a five-speed with a tight transmission. We recently took it to the foothills of Georgia, and it hugged the curves like a cocktail dress.-Extremely spacious and practical. The back seats fold flat, turning the hatchback into enough space for a touring band's equipment or an emergency bedroom. I've transported couches, desks, and large tables with the hatch closed.-Well-maintained, with oil changes at recommended intervals for the period of ownership. All fluids etc. were recently topped up.-Quite fuel efficient. Even after all these years, gets about 27 mpg highway.
There are some small repairs needed and some relatively small downsides.
-Car needs a new steering column clock spring. This drives the driver-side airbag. This is a $350 dealer repair.-Display on stereo is broken. Everything works fine, but finding stations takes some patience.-Passenger side door does not unlock remotely. I think this might be a factory setting, not sure.-About the number of dings and minor scrapes you'd expect on a 13 year old car, but nothing deeper than the top of Lincoln's head on a penny. Generally, nothing particularly noticeable.-Subtle upholstery stains in two places. I'll be getting it detailed soon to see if those can be fixed.
