You are bidding on a visually pleasing and mechanically fresh 1966 Triumph TR4A. This is a Wire Wheel, Overdrive, Surrey Top, car with solid beam axle. It was a Canadian delivery vehicle with other upgrades such as walnut wood dashboard and steering wheel. This is the end of a two year journey that saw every mechanical component of this car rebuilt or replaced.
THE ENGINE
With just a little work we had the engine in this vintage Triumph running great. During our freshening of the engine bay we discovered that the previous owner had filled the cooling system with stop leak in order to fix a leaking radiator. Knowing that the block was probably obstructed we decided to completely rebuild the engine rather than sell one that might run hot. The engine was completely rebuilt, pistons, liners, reconditioned cylinder head & rods, polished crankshaft, new oil pump and gaskets. We acquired a better radiator and had it reconditioned, new hoses, and the SU Carburetors were sent out and professionally rebuilt including throttle shafts, and then polished. Intake manifold was cleaned and powder coated, exhaust manifold was coated with Eastwood exhaust coating. The rebuilt engine runs strong, carries 50lbs oil pressure at idle and has only run in time.
THE TRANSMISSION
Overdrive gearbox was checked while the engine was out of the car and it functioned properly. Fluid was changed and minor repairs were made.
THE CHASSIS
Much to my surprise, while the engine and transmission were out for repairs and the interior was removed, my partner pulled the body to make chassis upgrade easier. All suspension bushings were replaced, all brake lines are new, all brake parts are new or replaced, front calipers were rebuilt and powder coated. The frame was cleaned and received a fresh coat of black paint.
WHEELS & TIRES
We had the 5 original wire wheels, which were in nice shape, glass beaded, and powder coated a nice silver grey. All five Michelin X redline tires were cleaned and re-mounted on the wires. These tires are in nice shape with no dry rot or cracks. I judge them to be older and somewhat hard.
ELECTRICAL, MECHANICAL
I am happy to state that everything works on this car. All the lights, all the gauges, the heater, the wipers... everything! Everything except flash to pass... and we're still working on it.
THE BODY
The weakest part of this car is the actual body and fit and finish. As you can see by the images this car photographs well and it is a GREAT DRIVER... not a show car. The body has paint chips and a scratch or two. There are a few small bubbles in the paint on the rear fenders but nothing major. The color is a very warm red similar to 1969 Corvette Monza Red. The paint is base clear and we judge it to be 15-20 years old. All weatherstrip is new and fresh. Front bumper is TR4... not 4A...previous owners choice or Canadian spec? Rear bumper has some sand marks in the chrome from previous owner. One thing for sure, with this extensive rebuild, we could find no evidence of any major collision damage.
INTERIOR
The door panels and seats are original and in very nice condition. The dash and steering wheel were upgraded by the previous owner. The center horseshoe console was repaired and resprayed. Carpeting and rear cargo area panels are new as are the sun visors.
TRUNK
Trunk panels were constructed to match stock panels which were missing, Trunk seal is new.
SUMMARY
This TR4A is a super value for someone looking for a great daily driving vintage ports car that is mechanically fresh and ready to roll.
