We purchased the vehicle about 25 years ago in Olive Branch, Mississippi.
About 17 years ago we started doing things to improve the
car for our purposes.
We never intended to fully restore the car will make it a
show car only. It was to be a driver.
We installed new floor boards in the car. The floorboards
were purchased from the Roadster Factory.
Seats were replaced with leather Miata seats on custom-made
mounts.
New carpet, door panels, and rubber weatherstripping around
2000 and the car was converted to a GM alternator.
John Hendrickson at 1 CAAT in Maryville, TN refreshed the
suspension with new springs, bushings, shocks, etc. around that time.
New minilite replicas installed with Cooper tires.
I installed Crane electronic ignition.
I removed the bumpers and sun visors for a cleaner look. They go with the car.
About 10 years ago I procured a surrey top and center section and
installed them to replace the convertible top. I still have the
convertible top and frame. There is an
aluminum center section with damage to the mounting points. I
don’t use it.
I took the car off the road for the winter of 2011 and
completely rewired the car using an Advanced Auto wire kit.
We have driven the car to the 2007 6-Pack trials in Hershey, Pennsylvania, the 2008 trials in Townsend, Tennessee (only 50 miles away), and
2010 trials in Oxford, Ohio. We have also taken the car on many
1-200 mile tours around our home area. The car has proven dependable on
all these journeys and we have never had it towed on any of our
journeys.
We have never had to do any major repair to the engine, transmission, or other driveline components.
Now for the things to do list and my concerns that I do not
have time to address.
When I rewired the car several switches were inoperable and
I bypassed them by using toggle switches.
The speedometer continues to be erratic as does the
tachometer. The needles on both bounce.
At some point before we purchased the car there was some
repair done on a front fender that appears to be less than perfect. This
is noticeable along the bonnet seam when you open the bonnet.
The bumpers would need to be re-chromed before being
reinstalled.
We have never attempted any body work.
Having not removed the head for any work we have not
converted the car to run on unleaded fuel. I have tried to add lead substitute
at each fill up without 100% success.
We have made no effort to keep things original. We were much more concerned about comfort and durability and maintenance.
The car does need to be repainted. It was originally
blue and it was repainted an orangey red before we purchased it.
Also for sale locally.
