This vehicle spent it's life in Madison, WI, as evidenced by the documentation. It is an original Epilog and appears to be numbers matching. The last of the German manufactured Beetles would be convertibles. Karmann produced the final car on January 10, 1980. During the final year of German production a Special edition Super Beetle was created. It was the Epilogue Edition. Each US dealer received one special edition convertible resulting in about 900 cars total. The cars were triple black with white headliner, special wood dashboard, factory installed radio and the deluxe wheels. The specs are below:
1, 585cc air-cooled OHV flat 4-cylinder engine
Bosch Air Flow Control electronic fuel injection
48bhp at 4, 100rpm
4-speed manual transmission
McPherson strut front and trailing-arm rear suspension
4-wheel drum brakes
In addition, note the stickers and markings that are still in place under the hood and in the glove box and gas cap.
Condition Report: This VW has been well maintained and appears to be nearly all original. It appears to retain it's original sheet metal and paint but is starting to show the age. Being a WI vehicle, there is scaly rust and some perforation under the car. The left headlight area and the running board mount on the drivers side are the worst areas on the body.
Also note the wheels are original to the car and the tires are fairly new. The spare still has what appears to be the original Michelin tire. The glass is all great and appears to be original. The convertible rear window is also glass and nice, and even has a factory defrost. The paint appears to be original or mostly original and getting thin in spots with some small touchups, marks and nicks. It could also benefit from a good buffing. There are dings and dents from years of use and storage as shown in the photos. The seats are in great shape but the front seat backs are in need of new foam from age.
Mechanically, the engine starts and runs well, but a bit cold blooded. We just spent $500+ on draining the gas, new gas line and a new Bosch fuel pump. The vehicle starts and shifts as it should. The newer tires make it ride better than most VWs. The brakes are in need of work (brake job) and are a bit of a challenge to stop the car. The emergency brake does work, as does the radio, heater and lights. The brakes should be looked at before the car is driven outside of a parking lot.
To summarize, it is our opinion that this car with minimal work would be a very nice driver. It is a great vehicle that could be easily reconditioned to drive reliably. It would make a great addition for the VW Bug enthusiast.
