I have owned this bus for about 14 years now. My 1974 VW camper bus is a deluxe model which has a fridge not just an icebox. The bus originally was rust free just a bit of surface rust, it has a full paint job with PPG paint basecoat clear coat .Only the best of the best paint products where used, all seams where seam sealed before paint. My intentions were to keep the bus as original as possible but updated also. Of course not everything could be kept original. The entire pop top was removed along with the luggage area and painted inside and out with PPG basecoat clear coat also to help on easy removal of dirty finger prints on the inside. It has a brand new three window canvas for the pop top along with all new seals. Both front doors, sliding door, rear cargo door and engine door all have new rubber seals. The front window along with window seal where also replaced. Lifting tape was use on the other windows prior to being painted. Both front inner doors, and jams where also painted. Newer tires, new hubcaps with rims painted to match. All lens , headlights, marker lights, ect. and side mirrors are new. Bumpers are repainted to match the top. Exhaust is aftermarket EPMI brand. My bus also has a very unique feature it has a furnace built in under the sink cabinet area which runs off propane. It is a hydro flame unit similar to what are in mobile home campers. Install was done correctly and has info packet and instructions on this unit. Thermostat is located on rear closet cabinet . I have two propane tanks one original and the other added on (to run the furnace) both have been taken down filled, cleaned and painted.
The underbody was all reundercoated up to the transmission . New oil cooler hoses. Break pads were all in good shape could use adjusted, and had the drums and discs refinished. Motor was fully rebuilt (still drips oil a bit but it is a VW they all do) and has a new single weber carborator ( could used tuned a bit, seems to run rich) new clutch, battreys, sparkplugs ect. Wiring has been rewired a bit to look cleaner along with some underneath. Engine bay along with all engine tin, heat exchange boxes and shrodes were repainted and new engine seal. The transmission has not been touched and has no issues (sloppy when in gear). As for the interior its all original except the front carpet and kick panels and its not in bad shape. Curtains are faded and there is a burn hole not very big. Some wood panels may have been replaced . No radio brand new speakers.
By all means this is a very nice bus, but is not perfect. This bus does not need much work or money to be perfect. I don't have the camper part of the bus wired. Doesn't sound as bad as you think. So sink, furnace and fridge are NOT working. I tested the sink by wiring the pump to +power and pumped water. The furnace and the fridge where never tested by me but was told they were in working order. All the wiring is there just needs figured out and wired to the second battery. Needs an axel boot and oil temp sensor for oil temp gauge and dash vent upper that I am aware of. The bus reads right around 190, 000 on the body. I have a lot of info, books and recipets also. I am sure there are things I have missed or overlooked, but was as accurate as I could be. This is my knowledge of the work done while it has been in my possession. This bus has always been stored in storage while I have owned it. Some one with a bit of VW camper knowledge or experience with these should have no problems. I now am working a new job and unfortunately I just don't have the time to finish it or keep it any longer . Any questions please email me.
