The Good:
Reliability: I bought this car with 35k miles on it and I am the second owner of this vehicle. Simply put, this is one of the best cars I’ve ever owned! This TDI is incredibly fun to drive and has been very reliable over the years. This car starts on the coldest of nights without issue and has some great features for wintery Colorado like auto-climate control, sunroof, and heated seats/ side mirrors. Surprisingly, this car handles very well in snow and with good tires, can easily hold its own in the mountains.
Gas Mileage: I routinely average over 45mpg and have even had trips where I average over 100mpg (though truthfully these have all been trips going downhill from the mountains!) This car passes emissions testing without problems and it is NOT one of the VW's that was recently recalled for rigged emissions testing.
Transmission: The manual transmission is incredibly reliable and smooth. No issues to date and the transmission fluid was changed at 100k. The low end torque of the engine helps make this Jetta very forgiving for new drivers as you will rarely stall out.
Condition: The car has been garaged for most of its life though it does have some minor scuffs and small paint chips that you would expect to see on a 10yr old car. Other than that, this is a great car that will give its new owner many years of reliable service! The interior is also in good condition and is free of any scratches, tears, dings, etc. The rubber floor mats have done a great job of protected the flooring over the years. NO RUST AND NO LEAKS!
Brakes: Brakes still have plenty of life on them.
Suspension: No known issues!
Engine: Equipped with a 1.9 turbocharged diesel engine. While not the fastest VW engine ever made, it has excellent torque and always puts a smile on my face! The turbo is great for Colorado as the engine is not as effected by altitude like a naturally aspirating engine would. The oil has been changed religiously every 5k miles at the dealership (I can provide some receipts if needed). Fuel filter changed about every 10k-15k and coolant flushed every 30-40k. No leaks to date!
Windows: Defrosters work great. No chips or cracks in the windows.
Frame: No accidents, straight frame. Some minor scuffs to paint (it is 10yrs old after all) but no large dents/ dings/rust.

The Bad: This is truly a great car, but unfortunately, it was also the first year of the “New Jetta” design so it has a few quirks that take getting used to. None of these issues affect safety or performance but I’ve gone ahead and listed out all of the known issues below:
Tires: The tires have enough tread to last through the winter but after that they will probably need replaced. I highly recommend the tires that are currently on the car!
Rims: The dealership put a clear coat film on the wheels as an extra protection from mag-chloride. Unfortunately, the film has started wearing off and there is a noticeable color difference between the areas with the film and without the film. This does not impact performance or safety - just appearance.
Dash: This is probably the most annoying fault of the car. During the summer, the dash will get hot and this causes the dash display to fade out.” This only impacts the driver’s ability to read the LCD display (not the dials) but the only two solutions are a costly LCD screen replacement or to park the car in the shade (I chose the latter). This issue does NOT impact performance, safety, or accuracy of odometer reading - its just an appearance issue.
Check Engine Light: This car has the “emissions workshop” check engine light which is caused by an overly sensitive coolant temp sensor. This is a common check engine light on the 2005 Diesel Jetta’s (VW changed the sensor in later models for this exact reason) and the error does not impact safety or performance. In anticipation of selling this car, I had a mechanic check that everything is running correctly and it still is. Because of this, I haven’t invested any more money into this issue but if it does bother you, the dealership did show me a work around to keep the check engine light from turning on.
Passenger Side Airbag Sensor: The “momentary weight exceeded” error is another known issue with this model year and it is caused when someone on the heavier side sits in the in the passenger seat. At this point, it’s more of a hassle to keep resetting the sensor so I just let it stay on.
Driver Door Controls: The driver door has wires that go through the door jam in order to operate the window controls, side mirror, gas cap, trunk release, etc. Unfortunately, another known issue with this model is that those wires tend to fray over the years due to repeated opening and closing of the driver door. For the past two years, the trunk release and gas cap release have only worked when the door is closed because of this door wiring short. A full wiring harness costs over $800 though I’m sure someone with some basic electrical skills could repair it for much cheaper… or just do what I do and make sure the driver door is closed when popping the gas cap.
That is about all I can think of, but feel free to ask questions as you have them. This would be the perfect car for someone who commutes long distances, someone new to driving standard transmissions, or those who are interested in driving for Lyft / Uber! KBB lists this car in “Good” condition at $4, 300. In the interest of getting this sold before the registration tags expire, I’m asking $4000 firm.
Now for the legal stuff:
Test drives will only be given for serious inquires. I feel like I shouldn’t have to state this but if you don’t have a drivers license or can’t get insurance I will not let you drive the car with my plates on it - period. I live in SE Denver and am willing to meet in the local area.
