2000 VW Jetta Smyth Ute Conversion
BACKGROUND:
This is the first Smyth Ute built when the kits became available to the public!
After following the development of this kit by Mark Smith and his team, my son and I purchased the first (2) kits which were available to the public. We finished this (our first one) right after the prototypes, the SEMA build, and the build on the television show last year were completed. We drove it to the SOWO show in Georgia in May 2015 in black epoxy primer, and then completed a full color change when we got back.
We started a company, building this one first as a personal vehicle/shop truck then building one for our first customer. We are currently building our 3rd, a nice clean 2003 Jetta TDI Ute!
MECHANICAL:
This was originally a 12V VR6 with an automatic transmission and has 178K on the odometer. We swapped in another 12V VR6 with new timing chains, a manual transmission, and a new clutch. The engine and trans have 150k miles.
The following parts were replaced new at that time:
Water pump, thermostat and housing, “crack pipe”, several worn plastic coolant connectors, temp sensor, spark plugs, ignition wires, valve cover gasket, oil cooler seals, right side axle, wheel speed sensors, rear wheel bearings, brake pads, rotors, and tires.

Note: Cruise control is not working.

Complete color change (Dattel braun seen on VW Buses in the 70’s) including the engine bay, door jambs, etc. , 20th Anniversary GTI front end swap, 20th Anniversary sideskirts, UPOL Raptor bedliner

The ute has been to SOWO 2015 GA, Waterfest 2015 (2nd place), 2016 Spring Show-n-Go NJ, and Circle ‘yer Wagens (Top 75) this past April in Tennessee! We’ve driven it up and down the East Coast and it was fast, fun, and reliable!
