Great news for the extreme economy and diesel lover motorist : This is an auction for a 1998 Diesel Jetta – “Goldene Serie” driven only 252 K Miles . Original German Built Vehicle.
This one may not be a good choice for people just not liking diesel in principle or older cars. And of course there are people who don’t need to drive much and therefore would not be benefiting from a savings of $5, 000.00 to 7, 000.00 a year in fuel cost . This one is clocked at 49 to 51 miles per Gallon.
GENERAL : IT looks Great, like a brand new vehicle on display no esthetic problems. No rust is noted anywhere. It starts prompt and purrs like a brand new diesel of its class ( drivers in the know would tell you at this mileage the VW diesel motor is still new for practical purposes ), it shifts easy and turns in perfect alignment with well adjusted braking. It has some remarkable swift acceleration. It doesn’t feel to me any different than a new one. It has the original radio cassette player, very good speakers. Everything works on the vehicle as it should except electric door and luggage locks , The system fuse for this function is removed #21, to avoid battery drain for prolonged parking -Perhaps with a new battery this may not be needed I don't know-. I found it this way practical and kept it. The buyer will need to decide for him/her self. The air conditioner and heater is working wonderfully. Interior is in great shape except the ceiling cloth off at parts and needs proper attachment. :
NEGATIVES : Well its old. The interior : shows it as would be expected but no major tear or other damage. I apologize for not getting it washed or cleaned. Just didn’t have the time with work demands.
ACCIDENTS : None
REASON FOR SELLING: The kids graduating and leaving the colleges left me with too many cars and too few drivers to man them ( or woman them ).
I came from Germany. I bought all my diesel VW vehicles in the US, initially not for fuel economy but , because they were just fun to drive , they needed almost no maintenance, practically never broking down.. ( in Europe the diesel fuel is more expensive than gas. It has always been like that. The diesel cars became popular not for their economy but because of their reliability, strength or, perhaps because they addressed to the inner male desire to drive a diesel ) .
Later on the fuel prices jumping the 50 miles per gallon of fuel the economy of VW diesel cars snowballed to a bigger advantage.. In my calculation it saved me $6, 200.00 per year per vehicle from the fuel cost alone; this based on my drive of approximately 40, 000 miles per year. The savings on maintenance and repairs must be close of more to that figure but impossible to calculate. The golden series – until the 2091 didn’t need anything other than using synthetic oil per every 15, 000 miles and timing belt change at every 90.000 miles. And it never brakes down needing any repairs so you can guess. (naturally the golden series of the VW, Mercedes, Toyota, Volvo is never to be compared or confused with the new era vehicles” engineered proudly for use-life limitation”
