Volkswagen’s answer to the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and the Porsche Cayenne. From inception, the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne were developed side by side to spread out the development costs of an entirely new platform. The first-generation Touareg was in some ways a better SUV than its flashier brother. In areas where the Porsche seemed over-styled and too tech-y, the Volkswagen remained classy and useable. It was also hard to argue with the value of the VW, since much of the equipment was shared between the two vehicles. Last year, the redesigned 2011 Cayenne took home Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year award. Because the Touareg had to wait several months to get the new platform, it wasn’t included in last year’s competition, but understandably, there are big expectations for the more affordable VW version of the Cayenne.
