1966 Volvo 122S
that I purchased two years ago that shown on both BAT and eBay. I bought it because for years I had wanted a Volvo Amazon and had missed buying a coveted 123GT.
Why am I selling you might ask?Answer: I just found a 123GT and so it is time for this 122S to find its new home to make room for the 123GT.
This 122S has been an absolute pleasure to drive. It is a car that makes you smile along with everyone else that sees it, either on the road with a lot of thumbs-ups, or, parked where I definitely cannot get right in and drive away without some discussion around how great the color is, how original the car is, how cool the interior is, etc...
As you know, old Amazon's are gaining in collector status. They are enjoyable to drive, easy to maintain, and parts are widely available for these cars. And, they are easy to work on.
Since I purchased this 122S from the CA owner and shipped it to NY, I have spent a couple thousand $'s to get the car even more sorted than when it arrived (as they always do) including;1. Completely rebuilding both carburetors2. Installing a new clutch master cylinder & slave3. Reassembling the throttle and adjusting the chokes4. Changing the engine oil5. Draining, flushing, refilling the transmission fluid, anti-freeze and differential fluid.6. Replace all spark plugs7. Adjusting valves, ignition points, setting timing & mixture8. Bleeding the brakes10. Degreasing engine compartment11. Removing, cleaning & polishing the carburetor tops12. Replacing air cleaners13. Repainting valve covers14. Replacing fuel lines & fuel filter15. Replacing radiator cap16. Wet-sanding and thorough detailing (look at how nice the paint came out!!!)17. Last but not least. .driving it like I stole it (at a 122S speed)!!!
If you've never driven a 122S and are considering buying this car, you should know that 122S' pretty much float down the road. They are super easy to drive, are very nice cruisers, have a really tight turning radius, the seats are very comfortable, the windows roll completely up & down in a few short turns, the gear shifter is like 3 feet long so getting in & out of gear is very cool as you kind of sit back, depress the clutch, and find the gears from a seemingly low-rider cruiser position. The field of vision is like being in a fish bowl - you can see all around. And the skinny tires make for a very retro, original presentation. There is plenty of roominess inside the car, whether out for a drive with one person or a full load of five people. The back seat is especially roomy and comfortable.
I will provide a refresher for everyone's benefit around the listing on BAT and the comments posted about the car at the time I purchased it 2013, including quotes from the reviewers/bidders at that time:1. The car has a good looking respray. Note: The wet sanding and detailing I did really made the color and paint pop even more and took out many of the small little scratches that accumulated over the years.2. Graphite Gray (original color) over the factory red upholstery looks great.3. Panels are straight and well-formed.4. Glass, plastic & trim are look good.5. Rear bumper has a few scratches and chipping as does the drop rail on the driver's side.6. The gear shift knob is after-market. Note: I could care less - it is very cool IMHO7. Car is well-cared for. Note: I have done even more than the previous owner, and this car has been garaged throughout my ownership, with a car cover over it in the garage.8. Odometer reads 65K miles. I don't know if it is 65K or 165K so I can't answer about that. That is absolutely a non-issue for a Volvo owner knowing how bullet-proof these cars are. Given good maintenance Amazon mileage is essentially irrelevant. Well kept 122S can go several hundred-thousand miles.9. Grilles a little dented. Note: This is a 50 year old car - what would you expect?10. Mudflaps are supposedly incorrect (I don't know if they are or are not). Note: If they are wrong you can find the right ones - these are very nice in any case.11. There is an odd single spotlight on the front bumper but is looks cool.12. The car presents itself extremely well, nicer than most you see anywhere.13. It is not a 'concours' level car. It is a very clean driver. Even cleaner now with the money I've put into the paintwork.14. Front door pockets are in great shape.15. Under dash glove box in tact16. Beautifully preserved car. Sunshades correct, shift boot should be black, best of all, passenger assist straps and seat belts are perfectly preserved. Has original spare tire with the optional tool vest draped over it. Also has the tire jack correctly placed in its rubber hold down. The original trunk rubber is still in place, however, it has seen better days. Few 122S' even have the original trunk mat installed, let alone be in good condition.17. Engine compartment is fine, heater hose and battery cables fine.
This car has only one real idiosyncracy: it likes to be warmed up for 3 -4 minutes before getting going. That means always starting it with the choke on and gradually moving the choke to off over that time period as you get started. Once warmed up you're on your way. These cars are extremely reliable.
That's about it. The car is in much better shape than when I purchased it. I hope it finds a great home. Good luck to the bidders and the next owner who will have a really nice, extremely well-preserved Amazon.
