Description:

1972 Volvo P1800 ES Barn/Garage find.
Thanks for visiting our auction of a 1972 Volvo shooting brake. This is an unrestored barn/Garage find.
Rarity
This is a very early 1972 model P1800ES. #799 of 8077 produced for the model years 1972 and 1973. One of the first to hit dealer showrooms in the US, it likely caused quite a spike in traffic at the Volvo dealer.
Clear Title
California title. On non-op. Purchased from second owner who had the car in dry storage for many years. Original owner was a Highway Patrolman.
Low Mileage
Six Digit odometer shows 74000 miles. Believed to be correct miles but no documents on hand to verify provenance. The odometer is functioning properly.
High optioned
Borg Warner Automatic Transmission operates properly. Air Conditioning is present but needs service.
Appreciating
In 2014 several of these cars sold at auction for sums in excess of $80, 000. Wayne Carini’s (Chasing Classic Cars TV show and SCM Magazine) December 2014 article in Forbes predicted $100, 000 sales in 2015.
Tomo reviewed this Volvo P1800 in detail. Here are his impressions of the car and the market:
Today we are checking out a very cool 1972 Volvo P1800 ES. This rare car has an enthusiastic worldwide following, even attracting the nickname “snow white’s coffin” in Germany. The expansive glass space and beauty of the car being fit for a queen in slumber.
Number 799 of the 8077 produced in only a two year run, this was volvo’s flagship vehicle. It was quite expensive, even when new, and was more expensive than the Corvette of the same year. Technologically advanced, featuring bosch d-jetronic fuel injection and unique styling, the car soon realized a cult following, that has stayed with it through today. Styling influences from this very car are easily seen on the back of the new volvo c30 series cars, with it’s signature large rear backlight area.
Most collector cars are impractical to utilize as daily drivers, however, the volvo P1800 is just the opposite. Many of these cars have several hundred thousand miles on them, as their owners found them reliable, economical, sporty, unique, practical and most of all fun to drive.
This example shows very, very low mileage on the odometer, at less than 75000 miles. It appears much of this is because the car has been in a covered, dry garage, awaiting its time to see the light of day, for the last 14 years.
The car had necessary fluids changed, was cleaned, had brake parts replaced and repaired (presumed to be the reason the car was initially placed into storage). ...and made driveable. Two front brake calipers and brake lines were replaced.
This car features rare factory air conditioning and some additional a/c parts come with the car. Lovely blue/black color combination. Paint is marginal. Not a top quality job. Factory styled steel wheels. The roof mounted luggage rack is not present but we have one available separately if so desired. The interior is in fair shape. Good seat upholstery with one cut noted on the driver’s seat base. The dash does have some cracks (suggest dash cap or rebuild). Factory original carpets are still in place, but show signs of wear and staining. Factory console and floor shifter. Original gauges in place. Stainless trim is nice, chrome has shine, but also has some areas showing rust. Exhaust muffler and tailpipe will need to be replaced. Floors appear to be original. Tires are fair to good but aged.
This car runs, drives and stops, but as any car that has been stored for a prolonged period of time, you will need to go through this car yourself, and attend to items to bring it to the condition you specifically desire. Not yet a show piece and not yet a completely roadworthy daily driver. This is a 40 year old car that has sat in storage, so understand although this is a unique collector car, it is also a used car. Expect flaws and condition of a 40 year old car that has not been restored, but it certainly has been loved and cared for…….that much is obvious.
If you follow the collector car market, you know these are about the hottest cars in the entire marketplace. Picked as a prime car for appreciation recently by Wayne Carini, the last four nice cars at auction each sold for in excess of $80k! Buy and hold or buy and restore.
