1916 Willys-Overland Knight Model 88-4 Seven Passenger Touring Sedan
Hard to find 7-passenger touring model in all original shape! This Knight hails from the former Ohio owner of 49 years and continues to run and operate just splendidly! Great show patina for survivor/driven class judging! One you really have to see in person to truly admire its ever-classic character!
The Willys-Overland Motor Company came to be in 1908 with John Willy purchased Overland Automotive Division from the Standard Wheel Company. He renamed his new venture the Willys-Overland Motor Company. It quickly became the second largest automobile manufacturer, behind only to the production volume of Ford Motor Company. What Willys-Overland lacked in production numbers, they made up for in quality and reliability! Particularly when he introduced the Knight sleeve-valve engine in 1914 after completing a 4, 500 mile trip throughout England using the Charles Knight designed engine in just 15 days! This special engine ran surprisingly quiet by not having poppet valves, was more dependable by not requiring valve springs that could weaken over time, and possessed the unique characteristic of increasing in engine compression over time as it developed carbon deposits within the head. This style engine was used in all Willys-Overland vehicles from 1914 through 1933, only as they tried to survive the Great Depression after filing for bankruptcy. John Willys went on to succeed in multiple other automotive business ventures of course, but the coveted sleeve-valve engine was gone forever, leaving them highly cherished among collectors today!
We are very excited to offer this 1916 Willys-Overland Knight 88-4 Seven Passenger Touring that has been tucked away in a private Ohio collection since July 1966! Showing just 26, 054 miles from new, this largely original example is simply a delight to admire in all respects! Finished in Medium Blue with Black fenders, a matching top and interior leather upholstery continue to appear as original to this car. It rides on chassis #4004 utilizing a comfortable 121” wheelbase. Options include original number’s matching 240.6ci inline 4 cylinder 40hp engine bearing casting date September 7th, 1916 and unit #5584, along with factory select-sliding 3-speed manual transmission, wood spoke artillery wheels wrapped in 34×4.5” No Skid Firestone tires, rear-mounted spare, Warner speedometer with trip meter, amperage & oil pressure instrumentation, dash mounted rim-wind clock (still functional), wood steering wheel, Boyce motometer, carpeted rear passenger compartment, and tinted Bausch & Lomb headlights!
An impressive display of original patina hardly takes away from this gorgeous time capsule! With minimal effort from our service department, the mechanicals of this vehicle continue to impress! It starts with utter ease, idles smooth, engages the gears without clutch chatter, and brakes equally confident! All original mechanical components, factory ID tags, patent plates, engine & chassis stamps are all present! A truly splendid example holding up to the raves these sleeve-valve engines have by reputation! Original built in Toledo, Ohio, this vehicle never strayed far from the factory and believed to have stayed in Ohio all its life. Each of the past two owners resided in Ohio, one in Canton and the most resent in Mentor. The former owner acquired it in 1966 placing it among some outstanding collectibles that included a rare 1924 White Touring bus and limited production 1927 Lincoln Dual-cowl Sport Phaeton! We are proud to showcase this gem in our showroom collection and hope to find it a new home soon! Please feel free to call with questions or schedule a chance to see it in person. Thanks for looking!
