1981 Delorean DMC
Highest Mileage DMC Available on eBay Today
This 1981
DeLorean DMC, #6668, is a five-speed manual transmission example that
is being offered for sale by its owner of 28 years. This
Delorean shows 87k miles and has been with the same owner since May, 1990. This
DMC was purchased new in November, 1982 at Towne Ford Sales in Redwood City, CA. The first owner, an employee at Stanford University, added fewer than 14k miles during his 8 years of ownership with most miles
driven on DMC Club tours in Northern California. The car has been driven
just under 87k miles as of today, and comes with a complete service history
file including the window sticker, original bill of sale, all service records
since new, a multitude of tech bulletins, and many rare pieces of original
marketing materials. This Delorean has spent its entire life in CA and AZ, and
has spent but a handful of nights outside of the garage.
The DMC’s
body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and came with brushed SS304 stainless
steel panels with no paint or clearcoat. The body and glass on this DMC are
original and in good condition with no dents. The owner notes that there are
several small blemishes on the front and rear bumpers where tape was adhered
during dealer prep shipment and delivery from Ireland to Irvine, CA. These
bumpers have been left in original condition rather than being repainted, and
can be seen in the image gallery below.
The
brushed stainless steel body panels on this car are 100% original with zero
bodywork from new. The car presents very
well with one minor slight indentation noted on the lower driver-side door
panel, which was present from factory delivery when new as per the original
owner. The exterior rubber, plastics, and trim are in
good condition and lights and side markers are all intact and work
correctly. The signature stock silver alloys are original
and in great shape, with minor curb rash on one wheel. The current set of tires
are Michelin Pilots, and are sized 195/60/R14 in front and 235/60/R15 in rear, with good remaining tread.
The DMC’s
gullwing doors are supported by preset torsion bars and gas-charged struts, all
of which operate as intended, and needing only 11 inches of side clearance to
open. The doors are said to function and seal properly, and still
retain their original pull-down straps. The
interior upholstery has been well cared for with the headliner and both seat
covers replaced some twelve years ago and remain in good condition. The
original cargo net is still in place.
The dash, gauge binnacle
and
center console are in good original condition with no cracks. Slight
discoloration can be seen on dash and both bumpers due to natural aging of the materials. Original speedometer is standard 1981 85-mph
unit, and the A/C system was converted to R134A and blows cold. All of the
gauges, lights, light switches, window switches, accessories, radio, and A/C
functions are said to work as designed. While this car has been maintained to a very high level of care, the
interior does show minor age-related wear. The original Craig Supertuner radio / cassette player works properly
with upgraded Eclipse speakers fitted in both foot wells with matching carpet
cover.
The
DeLorean uses a Peugeot-Renault-Volvo (PRV) 2.85 liter V6 that was designed and
built under special contract with DMC and is mated to a 5-speed manual
transmission. The motor and transmission are original to the car, and sits in a
clean, detailed engine compartment. The car runs strong and handles well, as evidenced by its 87K miles. The owner
would not hesitate to jump into the car today and drive cross country and notes
that the car has always been reliable and is very fun to drive. The car has
been well maintained to be driven and enjoyed, with all reliability upgrades installed. It has been the seller’s goal to watch the 5-digit
odometer roll over the 99, 999 mile mark, but this accomplishment will now be
enjoyed by the new owner.
The
car has been maintained by Danny Botkin at DMC of California in Huntington
Beach for the last several years. Previously the car was maintained at Delorean Motor Center in Garden
Grove, CA, by Don Steger and Danny Botkin. Don was factory trained DMC mechanic and owned
his own independent DMC only shop in CA for many years. Don trained Danny who performs his work with
the same knowledge and care as Don. The car
has received all updated improvements as available to assure reliability
as noted by the $32K in service receipts, and otherwise remains in factory
stock condition. All original parts were
retained where replaced by upgraded units, and accomany the car.
This DMC
comes with its original documentation, two keys, owners manual, window sticker, original bill of sale, DMC press kit, showroom brochure, warranty guide, troubleshooting guide, service log, and a variety of other documentation going
back to new including a rare DMC stock prospectus which was never released to
the public. A box of spare parts is
included and can be viewed in the photo gallery below. Additionally the
owner provides 68 issues of Delorean World club magazine, starting with Volume
1, Issue 1. The owner also provides a complete set of engine decals
manufactured out of stainless steel. This stainless decal set has never been placed on the vehicle and was
created by Delorean Club of Northern CA some 25 years ago, and are unobtainable
today.
Service
records totaling over $32k accompany the DMC, and documents for all service maintenance
performed since new are included with sale. Car is sold with a clean
Arizona title in seller’s name. Please
forward all questions to nine four nine – five eight four – six four four
five.
