Description:

1968 Datsun Roadster with Nissan SR20 engine and 5-speed gearbox
I listed this car prior to Christmas and the auction ended at a little less money than I was seeking, so I am trying again. The reserve price is very, very fair.
I bought the car around 18 months ago. I wanted a blank canvas to build my dream Roadster. I bought it without a gearbox and decided, since my prior car was a Nissan FJ20-powered Datsun 510, that instead of getting an original Roadster 5-speed gearbox I would yank the engine and do a Nissan SR20 conversion.
The bottom half of the car is mostly done. All that is left is to remove, detail and reinstall the engine and suspension, and powder coat the chassis. The body is not done. It looks decent in the photos but there are some problems. Unfortunately they were not disclosed by the previous owner and I discovered them after I bought the car and commissioned the engine conversion. I do not have the ability to rectify them and do not want to pay someone else to do it. Hence the car is up for auction.
Ruth Engineering / The Hot Rod Shop in Spearfish, South Dakota, did the engine and gearbox mounts and the chassis mods to install the SR20DE engine. They used the Spriso how-to, engine mounts, fitting jig and alternator fitting kit. Ruth Engineering's work is brilliant. You can see it in the photos and this video, which is a collection of footage taken as the work was done. here
The Nissan SR20DE and matching 5-speed came from JDM Engine Depot in New Jersey. The engine was compression tested prior to purchase and looks good. It DOES NOT have an ECU. The auction includes a new Nissan S13 SR20DE distributor cap, rotor, coil and leads, new front and rear main seals, and a new thermostat and water pump. Plus a second-hand ignitor. All of these are not fitted to the engine. There are two reconditioned Subaru Justy alternators. One fitted, one not. The price on the spare alternator was too good to pass up.
Now to the body... The car was media blasted by the second-last owner, and only rust proofing has been applied since then, but a 6-inch portion of the sills beneath the doors has been repaired with tin and pop rivets. The car had taken a hit in the front left and a replacement section - the front of the left-hand side inner fender - has been grafted on with pop rivets. The hood is there but also has pop rivets around the attachment points. One of the braces surrounding the engine bay has been repaired with fiberglass and a second brace is missing altogether. I am specifically talking about the chassis-like braces that are on the body, not chassis/frame, on either side of the engine bay. The horizontal beam on the right-hand (passenger) side has been repaired with fiberglass. On the driver's side, the diagonal beam is missing altogether. The parts I am talking about are best represented in these three photos that I found with a Google image search:
here
I am sure a competent sheetmetal worker could fix them, but I was unwilling to do this or find out what else lay beneath the rust-proofing on a supposedly media blasted and ready to paint car.
The interior includes what you can see in the video: Dashboard, very worn seats, some seat belts and the rollover bar. I have the centre console but it is awful. There are other interior panels too, which one of the prior owners intended to use as templates. They are all unusable.
The list of spares and parts not fitted to the car includes:A matching numbers 1600cc engine that will probably never be installed again, two sets of carburetors, an aluminum radiator and a whole heap of spares including the alternator and starter, gauges, knobs, lights and hardware and clips for the soft top. You can see this laid out in the video. Plus the master and slave cylinders pulled to install the engine.I have some outside trim but not a complete set of side strips. This includes some badges, although I am not sure what is correct for this model and year. There are front and rear bumpers. I bought a second-hand front bumper nicer than the one that came with the car so both are decent.I have the windows. There are door handles and some of the aluminum trim that goes on the bottom of the doors, but they're not very nice.Any other pieces of the interior that I have are garbage. The only part of the convertible top that exists is the frame shown at the end of the video. My to-do list included powder coating the chassis and painting the body, and installing a cooling system, fuel system, brake lines, ECU, aftermarket wiring harness and sparse interior.
The following things were listed in the ad when I bought the car. I have not verified these.
All lights and electrics work (HD-lites, park-lites, stop-lites, turn-sigs, heater blower, flashers, lisc.-plate-lite. All instruments work except ammeter in cluster gauge (replaced with small white ammeter in console).
I did, however, intend to replace the wiring front-to-back so we were not careful when pulling the engine or separating the body and chassis. You should not count on it being in good condition.
There were also a number of new and replacement parts already installed:
NEW parts: larger Alum. radiator and hoses, clutch assy and TO-bearing, 5 tires, Headlights and all bulbs, dist-cap+wires+plugs+points, Battery Relocation Kit, Alternator and Voltage Regulator, Brake pads-shoes-w-cyls, nuts-bolts-screws ($119. worth), dash-cover, rear-springs, shocks F&R, Gas Tank flush kit, wheel-studs, chrome lug bolts, Master Cyls, slave Cyl, brake lines (3), synthetic-lube in diff and tranny, U-joints, clutch-slave-hose and so much more. Have most of the new rubber bits, grommets, bumpers, VARIOUS SEALING RUBBER BITS for doors/hood/trunk/etc. But these need to be put in place after paint. Rebuilt assemblies: fuel pump, starter, Alloy-head, both carbs.
The auction winner must pay me a $500 deposit within 48 hours and the balance within 14 days or I will re-list the vehicle. The winner is responsible for pick-up and/or shipping. Should you be interstate, I will meet your chosen transport company and help them load the car.
Please don't hesitate to ask questions if you have some. I do not know the car's entire history but will do my utmost to answer them.
