Ford Bronco (1968)
for sale
Price: US $2,900.00
Price: US $2,900.00
Just out of barn storage! Up for sale is a 1968 Ford Bronco
4x4 half cab in stock, unrestored condition. Original 170 cu in straight 6 cylinder engine
with original 3 speed manual trans on the column, ‘ 3 on a tree’! This is a 2 owner truck with a clear
Wisconsin motor vehicle title. Great
rebuilding potential at a great price!
History of the vehicle: originally purchased new in Upper
Michigan for use as hunting/fishing camp utility vehicle. Purchased by current
owner in 1988 for use around farm, primarily winter snow plowing. New farm truck purchased in 2008 and Bronco
was taken out of service, in running condition, and put in the barn storage for
the past 7 years. Mileage: odometer reads 59, 995. Can’t say this is
original or not but truck was road driven very little so it is a real possibility
that the miles are original. Engine looks and runs like a low miler but who
knows? Reason for selling: stored vehicles and other contents of barn are being
cleaned out and put up for sale due to possible sale of property because of major
personal health issue. I am helping the vehicle for the owner.
Current status of vehicle: took the Bronco out of barn on a trailer to
take it over to my workshop to clean it up some and check it over before
advertising it for sale. First thing, I power
washed it to clean off 7 years of accumulated dust & grime. Next, disconnected fuel line from fuel pump
to avoid bad gas/water getting into carb, put in a battery, took out plugs, sprayed penetrating oil into cylinders and tested to see if it would turn over.
It did, starting system working. I cleaned and reinstalled plugs, checked
condition of wires, coil, starter, points, etc . all looked ok. I then hooked up a hose to fuel pump from
temporary gas tank with fresh gas. Topped off radiator with water, checked to
make sure there was oil, put a splash of gas in the carb and got in, pulled out
the choke and turned the key. Eureka!
After a few turns it fired right up! I was amazed! Waited while it warmed up until it would
idle on its’own, probably needs a tuneup after 7 years, ya think! but after the initial startup it ran just
fine. No strange noises or smoke. I put it into 1st gear and it
pulled forward, then tried reverse and that worked also. The brake pedal was to
the floor so I found the master cylinder empty. I filled the master and began
pumping pedal. The pedal did pump up, telling me that there likely are working brakes, however, I found a leaking
line on 1 rear wheel (see photo) so pedal will not hold, brake repairs are
needed. I then drove it off the trailer, yes with no brakes! and went up and down the driveway to test. Drove
good, steering good and tight. I was also surprised that I didn’t see any
radiator or hose leaks. Note; the oil
you see on the trailer floor in the photo came from oil spurting from a small
broken oil line going from engine to an add-on oil pressure gauge under dash. So now we know there’s good oil
pressure! I took off the line and plugged the fitting at the engine.
This is an excellent candidate to have a new body put on it
to make it look super! The frame and under parts are good and solid. The body
parts are in various stages of rust as photos show, the drivers’ floor area, as in most old broncos, is rotted
out. Passenger floor is getting there also. Truck bed is solid but is rusting in corners/edges. Hood is very good as
well as front grille, just need sand & repaint. Doors good but hinges/posts
need work. All glass is perfect, window cranks work fine. Ceiling is good, bench
seat is ripped a little and worn, but restorable. Removable top is good/solid and
has never been off but has old, worn out vinyl top that needs to be sanded off
before repaint. Looks to be original
rims. Tires still holding air, they are the old tube tires, but have cracks on
sides. Dash is good and headlights and heater did come on and battery gauge
showed charging so alternator is good. Vacuum
wipers operate. Gas tank was broken off
when pulling the truck up onto trailer, my fault! but will need a new one
anyways. Exhaust system is good. Good front bumper is included and also the
tailgate, both which were taken off years ago, but is in good usable condition, needs a good sanding and paint. Note:
battery and temporary gas can tank Not included in sale.
If I had the time and energy I would take off the body, blast the frame, etc, and undercoat all, and put on a new steel or fiberglass body and reuse the
original hood, doors, grille, top & tailgate. I would consider this truck as
a great candidate for an easier, less costly restoration resulting in a very
sharp truck!

again, and good luck!
Additional: I wrote up the above information 2 days ago in
anticipation of listing the Bronco on ebay today. Nothing has changed with that info. I just
felt I had to add that I just came into the house from moving the Bronco out by
the road for sale and I just can’t get over how it starts instantly and runs so
strong and smooth even though it hasn’t yet been tuned up after 7 years of
storage! Someone is going to get a very nice runner!
