With its lightweight aluminum construction, many consider it to be the first modern XJ and the last of the classic XJ's.
In 2004 the XJ also received the much improved second generation Jaguar V8- the 4.2, addressing many issues of the 4.0 it replaced, such as timing chain tensioners and throttle body. This is the first year the XJ used the ZF 6 speed automatic transmission.
In this example, you will find the V8 engine to be smooth and fast. The 6 speed transmission shifts smoothly as it should in all gears. No engine or drivetrain warning lights.
One issue with this series XJ was the air suspension. Upon purchasing this car, I upgraded the entire air suspension with the Arnott spring conversion system at a cost of approximately $1, 800. This car has new shocks and springs without the worry of air suspension failure. I have also replaced the fuel pump, water pump seal, serpentine belts, one rear wheel bearing. I have all service records of recent work done.
Known issues: SRS warning light indicating driver side airbag connection; possibly driver side airbag in the seat bolster or simply a wiring harness or sensor. Driver side air vents do not blow warm air with the heater. The 18 alloy wheels do have some curb rash. A few minor blemishes expected with a car of this age.
If you are looking for a Jaguar or any luxury car in this price range, you won't find a better example than this XJ8. J.D. Powers rated the 2004 XJ8 four stars for quality and five stars for performance and design.
