1979 Jeep CJ 5. 116264 miles with clear New Jersey title. I purchased this Jeep in April 2015 from the owner who had it since 1987 and only used it in the summer. The prior owner said the engine was rebuilt and new clutch installed about ten years ago and had only been driven about 1000 miles since. I do not have any receipts to prove this but my mechanic advised me that he would not doubt it had been rebuilt as it runs excellent. I had my mechanic go over the Jeep and he replaced the driver side front and rear wheel bearings and seals. He replaced a rear brake line and passenger front brake cylinder. He also adjusted the carb. I purchased a new oem front bumper and installed it as well as a new shifter boot and retaining plate. I have a tube rear bumper, step bars, bug deflector and grill guard that were removed from the Jeep that will go with it if the buyer wants them.
The front axle has been changed to what I believe may be a Dana 44 as it has drum brakes in the front and should have disc. The transmission is the T18 with granny 1st gear. The Jeep has manual steering and manual brakes. The gas gauge does not work and the heater fan needs to be replaced, The frame is EXCELLENT. It had been undercoated in the past and has not rot at all. The body had prior rust repair and you can see the filler cracking under the paint. You can see the original paint in spots which was silver. I don't know if this could be a silver anniversary edition ? I am not listing it as such as I have not done the research to see if it is.
The jeep has a body lift and rides on 33x12.50 tires. The tires are dry rotted but hold air. I have driven it on the street but would suggest replacing them for long term use. There is no top except for the bikini top. I have the original top frame and doors. The top was bad and discarded when I brought the Jeep home.
This Jeep would make an excellent base for a restoration as the frame and drive train are solid. It would also be an ideal off road vehicle or farm / hunt club Jeep. It could also just be driven as is after replacing the tires. I purchased this because I had a 1979 CJ 5 in the past and really liked it and it was close to my location but I don't have the time to restore it. I have two other Jeeps as well.
