Description:

This 1966 Lotus Elan Series 2 is a real attractive driver with good cosmetics and mechanicals. The car runs on its original frame, painted in the red oxide color, with the engine matching per the original build sheet. The car was sold new on July 16th, 1965 to the Dutchess Auto Company, who was the east coast Lotus distributor based in New York. We purchased the vehicle from Stetson Sports LC in the summer of 2013. The dealer had purchased it from Anthony Riviera, a gentleman who owned the car for 22 years, 1990-2012. The original (oil soaked) owner’s handbook comes with the car. Riviera had the engine completely rebuilt approximately 2, 000 miles ago. It runs as it should with even compression across cylinders. The Twin Weber carbs are one of the features of the Series 2 and these are doing a great job.
This long-term owner had the car resprayed this bright green, and though showing a small handful of stone chips and other imperfections, it is in excellent condition. It has no evidence of fading, cracking, or crazing. Computer screens sometimes distort the colors, while it isn’t original; it is very attractive in person. The paint has a few chips as expected but the bodywork is superb. There are no stress cracks and the panel and door fit is very good compared to other Elans and are the correct OEM five pin knock offs wearing good Vredestein tires. These wheels are certainly correct and may be original as far as I can tell. They are true without cracks or elongated pin drive holes as plagues some cars.
The Series 2 Lotus Elan’s are highly prized because they are the more pure version of the car as Chapman designed. They are a bit more refined than the Series One but still light weight and very much the sports car. It was the basis for the 26R racing version that did so well on the competitive front. A delight to drive with good power and the signature Lotus ride/handling balance.
The car tracks straight without wobbles. The four speed trans is a joy, snicks and shifts as a Lotus should. The prior owner had the suspension rebuilt, new wheel bearings and ball joints installed. The work was all excellent. All signal, brake and headlights work properly. Electrics have been converted to an alternator charged, negative ground system and an Odyssey dry cell battery is covered by an OEM style cover to prevent luggage damage. The battery is located behind the seat. The parking brake cables are present, The brakes work as they should, the brake pedal is at full height and the car stops as it should. The car runs it original frame painted in the correct red oxide color, wheel wells, floors and suspension components are all quite clean. The gauges and lights all work but the gas gauge is a little iffy. We have relied on a yard stick to be safe. It has the original wood wheel and a matching gear shift knob. The dash has been done, in what appears to be a bird’s eye, perhaps maple and matches the wood steering wheels quite nicely. The light switch on left hand drive cars is not on the column, but there is a control on the dash. The instruction book confirms this. It does have a few cracks in the veneer but these are not too bothersome to me. Sale includes the original jack and a handy workshop manual. Carpets have been replaced. Around the same time as seats and carpet a new top was fitted, while an original good quality Robbins Stayfast material tonneau cover is included. The trunk wears correct, well preserved floor cover material. The car has a clean US Title and is offered in a ready to drive condition.
