Beautiful Southern California 1980 Mercedes Benz 450SL convertible garage find. This time capsule red car with tan interior, tan canvas soft top and red hardtop was owned by very precise elderly lawyer who lived in posh Rancho Santa Fe. Preserved in dry California home garage until discovered in June of this year. Retro Nextel mobile console phone still powers up!
Excellent OEM glass Bosch Euro headlights with Bosch decals. Very nice shiny body paint looks to be all-original with some touch-ups of road chips and small scratches. Dry, clean, straight 99% rust free body, floor, hood, doors, wheel wells and trunk. (Don’t think unrestored classic can be called 100%). Chrome trim and badges sparkle.
MB-Tex seats and optional back jump seat are excellent with no tears or cracks. Console, door panels and black dash in top shape. Beautiful tan carpets long protected by thick MB-logo mats. Exterior lights, turn signals, horn, clock, courtesy lights and door buzzer work. Tach, gas, temp and oil pressure gauges work. Original Becker Europa II am/fm works with antenna hand pulled. Power windows work. Interior climate control and defrost work. Air-conditioner turns on, compressor engages and fan blow cool not cold.
Brand new German Sonnenland canvas top with crystal clear windows. Immaculate convertible top compartment still has factory fabric protector strips. Windshield is nice and clear. Has a rock chip. No rust red hardtop is very straight with good glass. Stainless trim has dents from install and removal over years. Several chips on the top have been touched up and may have been sprayed at some point. Small two-inch tear in rear of headliner.
Engine compartment is super clean and complete, with many original finishes, details and stickers. Brand new battery, new fuel pump and rear stabilizer links. Fresh oil, filter and coolant. Car runs strong, drives well and stop very nicely. Exhaust is quiet.
Nice trunk compartment with working light. Clean spare with correct hold down and excellent plastic spare cover with pull. Immaculate rust free spare wheel well. Excellent original plastic battery cover, hold down straps and jack. There are a few blemishes on trunk lid exterior paint in rear lower corners.
Undercarriage extremely clean and dry with a bit of red peeking through the undercoating. Wheel wells very clean. Bumpers nice. Rubber trim supple. Original paint on Bundt wheels is nice
This car is fresh to market, unseen and off road since 2001. Purchased from the lawyer’s widow. Core support vin number and windshield tag vin match the clean, open California title, although door trim tag came off some point and is missing. Reproductions are available. Includes some maintenance records a few dating to 1980s, the owner’s manual and a pair of MB top removal tools.
