1970 Mercury Cyclone GT, matching # N code 429 with factory 4 speed and 3.25 31 spline N case rearend. Well optioned with power steering, power disc brakes, hidden headlights, bucket seats, console, gauge package with factory tach, 14x7 Kelsey Hayes wheels, AM/FM with kick panel speakers and rimblow steering wheel. Originally medium green, now darker green with green interior. Very straight and mostly original car that can be driven while you restore it. Has a little over 134k miles.
The body on this Cyclone is very straight with almost no rust or evidence or previous rust repairs in the quarters, doors, fenders, trunk, trunk drop offs, frame rails or shock towers. No dents and not really many, if any, dings to speak of. The front floors needs work due to the front windshield seal drying out and leaking. Right quarter has a couple small bubbles at the very bottom, very minor. Cowl looks solid. Appears to have all original body panels. Body panels line up well and the hood is not warped or bent and lines up well. Doors open and close nicely and the driver’s door is not cracked around the latch like almost every Torino and Cyclone out there. The paint is very old, faded and has plenty of chips, scratches and touched up areas. It still has some shine to it and looks good from 20+ feet away and while driving by. Looks good enough to drive and still gets comments and compliments. Could look better if you put some time into it but could certainly use paint. Bumpers are faded but are very straight. Hood trim has a couple small dings, trunk trim is pretty nice with small nicks etc. Side trim has been replaced with aftermarket stick on trim. Looks pretty good but once the car is painted the trim should either be replaced with original trim or deleted as I was going to do. I think they look better without side trim like a base Cyclone or Spoiler but that is just my opinion. I was going to go Grabber Green. Grill is in pretty nice condition. There is a crack at the top of the center section that is not too noticeable unless the hood is up. Headlight doors will go up after the car has been parked for a bit but operate properly with the headlights on and off. Shock towers have holes cut for greasing the upper control arms. It retains the original 14x7 Kelsey Hayes wheels that are in very nice condition. The center caps are reproductions and trim rings have minor dings and scuffs as you would expect. Tires have lots of tread and look good with no apparent cracking but I don’t know how old they are. Glass all looks good.
The interior is mostly original and needs to be restored. The console is very nice and the 4speed plate is one of the nicest I have seen. It has the original Hurt shifter which works well and the original T handle with set screw. The reverse lockout rod is missing. Driver’s seat has been recovered but the color is off a bit from the other seats. Dash is warped badly from years in California and needs restored. Headliner needs to be replaced. Carpet is original and is still presentable but is worn where the sill plate meets the kick panel. Rimblow steering wheel has cracks and needs restoration. Door panels are in pretty good shape with minor scuffs and warping but not holes. The dash looks like is was cut a bit for an aftermarket stereo however the original AM/FM is currently installed. Rear seat is nice and passenger seat is nice but splitting at one seam. I found a source for original upholstery and a sample will come with the car. You could just have the driver’s seat reupholstered and get the passenger seat repaired.
The 429 starts right up and runs good with no knocks or noise coming from it. It idles smooth and performs as it should. It is mostly stock with the exception of chrome valve covers and a Holley carb. Still has original intake and exhaust manifolds and even still has the factory heat riser on the exhaust manifold. It has a wider than factory radiator but retains the original, and very hard to find, fan shroud. It has a small chip out of it but would be easily repairable. There is no smoke under most conditions, however, after it’s warm and then turned off and then started again after a few minutes it smokes momentarily. This is due to dried of rubber valve seals and would be an easy fix performed in a few hours without removing the heads. Toploader 4speed works as it should and the clutch is nice and smooth. Suspension has a squeak in it but it drives straight in the little I’ve driven it since I’ve owned it. All lights work including the reverse lights. Wipers, heater and factory AM/FM all work. All gauges work including the tach and gas gauge.
Overall this is a very solid and original Cyclone that is very well optioned. It is matching #’s, (yes, I checked the vin on the back of the block) It can be driven as is or you could do a very light and easy restoration to bring it back to its former glory. Almost all the hard to find pieces are here. This was one of my “keeper” cars and the only reason I am selling is I found a nice 71 Torino GT convertible 429CJ and now I need to sell a few cars to pay for it. Soon I will also be selling a 1972 Torino GTS Fastback Q code and a 1970 Torino convertible GT N code. Both matching # cars and good drivers. Also, a 1971 Torino GT 429CJ, shaker car, originally Grabber Green metallic. Very rare, decent looking and matching #'s with virtually no rust but will need some work. All will be on ebay over the next couple months
Car is sold as is where is with no warranty expressed or implied. It is available for inspection by appointment only. I have done my best to describe it accurately but please understand that this is a 45 year old car that needs some restoration work. International buyers are welcome. Full payment must be made within 5 days of auction end and vehicle must be picked up within 21 days of auction end unless prior arrangements are made. Payment by cash or wire transfer only. Shipping is the responsibility of buyer. Bidders with a feedback rating of less than 10 must contact me prior to bidding.
