This is a 1964 Mercury Montclair, a breezeway style because the rear window/windshield is a power window that lowers allowing for greater circulation in the car. For 1964, the Monterey was the base model, the Montclair was the middle and the Park Lane was the high end.
80k original miles. Car has power steering and floats down the highway comfortably. Tons of room with four doors, comfortable seats, gigantic trunk. A definite eye catcher.
This car has a recent paint job, new wheels and tires, a Flowmaster dual exhaust and a 390 engine. The original AM radio was removed over the winter and sent to a place in Florida that preserves the exterior appearance but replaces the guts with an AM/FM radio with Bluetooth. You can stream music directly through this radio with a smartphone or other Bluetooth device. It has two speakers that resemble air conditioning ducts. It also has a underseat speaker and subwoofer, which has not been connected yet but comes with the car.
The frame and floors are solid and there is undercoating under the car. It is a very solid car, which is why I purchased it to begin with. Mechanically there are things I have planned to do for preventive purposes, but the car is registered and inspected and I drive it routinely.
More details about the car:
Let me be as clear as I can about the condition of the car, which you can see in the pictures: It is a nice daily driver. Yes, I took it to a car show, but it's not a show car. It has a solid paint job that looks very nice as the car is going by. If you want to get up close and look at edges, it will not hold up to that kind of scrutiny. You can tell where chrome trim was taped over instead of removed in some cases, etc.
Cosmetically it looks great, but that extends to the paint, the interior, the wheels and tires, and NOT the engine bay, which I have not addressed. You could scrub the engine down, sand and repaint the valve covers and air filter cover, etc and bring that area along but I have not done it yet.
There is a new piece of carpet in it, but unlike everything else that was done for this car by professionals, I did that myself and frankly it looks amateur. It's a vast improvement over the worn old carpet, but I work in higher ed, not as a mechanic, and it shows. The headliner is old and could be replaced, it has not bothered me. The seats are original and are in good condition for the year.
I have limited photos of the underside of the car, but this is a strong point for the vehicle. It is why I bought it. I sold a previous New England antique car that was crumbling underneath. This one is solid. It has been stored inside during winters, it has an undercoating, and is very solid. You are more than welcome to come and climb underneath. Frame, floors, trunk, all good.
What has been done:
Paint, battery, brake lines, carpet, radio, wheels and tires, dual exhaust.
Remaining:
Needs sending unit for temperature gauge to work, needs exhaust manifold gaskets to patch exhaust leak. It has never overheated, but in my previous cars I have always had the radiator upgraded or recored and I would probably do that if I kept it. I live in a small town and haven't needed them, but the door locks are not great. I had the stereo and small speakers installed, but haven't bothered yet with the underseat speaker and subwoofer which will come with the car). The car never had seat belts. I believe 1964 was the last year before they became standard. You could easily bolt inexpensive aftermarket lap belts into the floor.
It is a solid car that starts every time, it passed inspection with flying colors, and I drive it with confidence. With previous owners it sat for a long time unused and responds well to being driven. I am selling because I feel like I accomplished what I wanted to do with this car and I wonder what else is out there.
I reserve the right to end the auction early if an interested party or bidder comes to look at the car and makes the right offer. I'm happy to answer any questions that I can.
Shipping and Payment:
I will not ship this car. I strongly prefer in person pick up, and that the prospective owner come see the car and know this is what they want. I am not familiar with the process of buyer arranged shipping, but once I have payment, that could be worked out. Come take a look at the car, bid on it or buy it, and drive it home or trailer it if you like. It's winter storage in in southern New Hampshire over 100 miles away and it has cruised down there without issue.
