Description:

I purchased this car from an older gentleman in 2011 who had done a lot of work on the body such as replacing floors pans, filling the dog legs and outer rockers with expanding foam after coating the insides with roofing tar. He also stripped and repainted the car. The original color was a light yellow as compared with the present bright yellow. He drove the car for about 18 years after making the above repairs himself. He replaced the engine with one from a 1971 car including the 4 speed synchromesh transmission with overdrive, added a header and stainless steel exhaust. He later replaced the head from a 1977 car that used unleaded gas. Six years later he removed the engine and transmission to replace the clutch. At that time he took the engine to a machine shop for new rings, bearings and a timing chain. Shortly after getting the engine back he hurt his back and had to have an operation. The car sat idle for about 1 1/2 years. When he finally put the engine back in the car it wouldn't turn over. The machine shop that did the work was out of business. He decided to sell the car to help pay his medical bills.
I bought the car in 2011 and towed it home. The engine would not turn over. I thought the new rings may have rusted to the cylinders and put a mixture of mineral spirits and automatic transmission fluid in the cylinders and tried to rock the car to break it free. No luck. I removed the head and discovered a hex nut in the number four cylinder that was blocking the piston from making the full stroke. After I removed the nut the engine turned over but would not start. I removed the carburetors and cleaned them. They were all gummed up from the old gasoline. I finally got the engine to crank and balanced the carburetors. I drove the car short distances and was having spurious electrical problems. After looking at the rat's next of wires under the dash that were labeled with old masking tape I decided to re-wire the entire car, which I did. I did not strictly follow the original wiring colors except all of the always hot wires are still brown, the wires that are hot when the ignition is on are still while and all of the ground wires are still black. I made a 24 x 36 blow up of the wiring diagram out of the Haynes Manual and have marked wire colors. I replaced the turn signal switch with Moss part no. 141-770. I also used spade connectors instead of the bullet connectors. I replaced the clutch hydraulic line to straighten it out. I replaced the fuel line with stainless steel tubing and put stainless braided hoses to each carburetor. While re-wiring the car I removed the metal dash, has it sand blasted and re-painted it with black wrinkle paint. I bought some cut black pile carpet and replaced the transmission tunnel and front and back carpets. I put sound deadening and heat insulation material under this. I've replaced a lot of small trim pieces to dress the car up somewhat. I still have the original AM radio (positive ground), but I removed it and replaced it with a blanking plate with the MG logo. The convertible top is in excellent condition and has hardly been used. I also have a factory type hard top, but it is missing some pieces.
I would not say that this car has been professionally restored, but it runs good and looks good. I'm ready for another project car, so it's someone else's turn.
