For the man with the Octagon
Spirit... magic in a new shape (original MGB brochure cover) I have only seen two GT's that received $65-70k. level restorations ever come for sale. Being one of these cars, this Pininfarina designed early 1967
MGB GT is perfection. The beautiful fit and finish is a testament to the
previous owner’s high level of expertise and his racing team’s great technical
abilities. Rodney Smith was an avid collector and vintage racer, with exquisite
taste in automobiles. This MGB was restored to the same standards Rodney demanded
of his most exotic automobiles, which included ERA racecars, Maserati 300S, Alfa Romeo 6C, and other valuable automobiles. Rodney’s wife had an identical
MGB GT in college and the car was restored as a surprise gift for their wedding
anniversary.
The documented ~600 hour restoration
began with the complete disassembly of a low mileage (odometer currently
reading 22, 221 miles), rust-free California MGB GT. The body was delivered to
the body shop on a jig and painted in its original Tartan Red. The paint
quality and level of detail inside the engine compartment, door jams, and
hinges is incredible. Underbody shots showcase the rust-free cleanliness one
dreams about. All original factory body panel seams are present and look perfect
with no signs of any collision damage. The car still wears its original
aluminum hood and California black & yellow license plates. The side mirror
is a pricey attractive Talbot & Co.– Berlin bullet. Being an early
production car, this car does not have the ugly white plastic square reverse
lights.
Mechanically this car is incredible and drives even better than it looks. It is
by far the best MGB I have ever driven. Noteworthy features are tight steering, torquey motor, and the wonderful exhaust note made by the Ansa exhaust system. All systems were completely gone through. The
engine was precision built by an expert racing team with a mild performance
camshaft. Being a passionate vintage racer, the owner chose to go with the
original 4-speed gearbox, adding a performance clutch. The entire suspension
and brake system was gone through with all new bushings, lines, etc. The wire
wheels are brand new from MWS with stainless steel spokes. The wiring harness
has the original style cloth wrapping. The dual 6v batteries were replaced with
a single 12v drycell battery.
Inside, the metal dash with correct
wrinkle finish, Personal wood steering wheel and original black leather with
contrasting red piping makes for one of the most attractive classic interiors.
The switches and center speaker console are reminiscent of a James Bond Aston
Martin. Everything was completely redone, including a new headliner, sunvisors
and premium grade carpets. All gauges, lights, and switches work as designed.
The car has 3 sets of mats: original style rubber stamped with the octagon
emblem, vintage CocoMats in contrasting red & black, and black carpet.
The car comes with the original
factory owner’s manual and sales brochure. The original tools, consisting of
the factory jack and lead hammer, are with the car. The spare looks to be
original and is a painted wire wheel with period correct tire. The car also
comes with the Robert Bentley official workshop & tuning book.
Feel free to call for additional details or to arrange to see the car in person -
