1917 LOCOMOBILE PROJECT CAR. (THAT IS LOCO AS IN LOCOMOTIVE)
DASH PLATE INDICATES THIS IS A MODEL 38 LOT 2. NUMBER 13252.CAR - 1916 MOTOR BLOCK CASTING NUMBER IS VERIFIED - 139 1/4 INCH WHEEL BASE.- 38 HP , 523 CI SIX CYLINDER. TWIN DISTRIBUTOR, TWIN SPARK PLUGS .WATER COOLED. MANUAL TRANSMISSION WITH STANDARD. H PATTERN SHIFTER.
LOCOMOBILE WAS ONCE THE MOST FASHIONABLE AND EXPENSIVE CAR BUILT IN THE USA, FEW WERE SOLD, WITH A PRODUCTION RATE OF FOUR PER DAY. THUS THESE CARS ARE VERY RARE..
I AM SELLING THIS VEHICLE AS A PROJECT/PARTS CAR ÄS IS WHERE IS IT IS NOT A RUNNING VEHICLE, IT ROLLS FREELY, TIRES HOLD AIR, AND IT CAN BE TOWED. DOLLIED, SHIPPED OR FLAT BEDDED..FROM WATERTOWN, NEW YORK, 13601 ( I LIVE UPSTATE, ONE HOUR NORTH OF SYRACUSE). THIS IS A TITLED CAR..
THIS PROJECT CONSISTS OF RELATIVELY COMPLETE MOTOR, DRIVE TRAIN, CHASSIS, SOLID WOOD WHEELS, PARTIAL BODY FRONT TO COWL, BRASS WINDSHIELD FRAMING, TWO DOORS, BOYCE LOCOMOBILE RADIATOR CAP. THERE ARE SOME LOCOMOBILE, OR OTHERWISE PERIOD GAUGES AND SWITCHES ARE IN THE DASHBOARD. .MECHANICAL BRAKES OPERATE REAR WHEELS. .
I WAS INFORMED BY SEVERAL LOCOMOBILE SOCIETY MEMBERS THAT THE ORIGINAL SIX CYLINDER BRONZE BLOCK MOTOR IN THIS CARSHAD BEEN REBUILT SHORTLY BEFORE MY PURCHASE $$$$, IT WAS ENTERED INTO THE 1991 GREAT AMERICAN ROAD RACE.AND LATER SIDELINED WHEN THE RADIATOR WAS ACCIDENTALLY PUNCTURED WHILE DRIVING FROM CALIFORNIA THROUGH TEXAS. (THE RADIATOR LEAK STILL NEEDS A REPAIR).
THE CAR HAS BEEN GARAGED SINCE I PURCHASED THE MOTOR TURNS OVER FREELY AND HAS COMPRESSION, I TEST RAN IT SHORTLY AFTER MY PURCHASE IN 1991. AND NO NOTICEABLE ISSUES OR NOISES WERE DETECTED, I BELIEVE THE MOTOR SHOULD START WITH A NEW BATTERY, FUEL. AND A TOUCH OF TLC IT HAS A CRANK AND ELECTRIC STARTER AND WAS CONVERTED TO AN ALTERNATOR CHARGING SYSTEM BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER. I HAVE A FUEL TANK THAT WILL WORK FOR IT.
THE CAR NEEDS TO BE RE-BODIED AND FINISHED, THESE CARS GENERALLY END UP IN HIGH END AUCTIONS .I NEITHER HAVE THE MONEY, TIME OR AMBITION TO COMPLETE IT , THE BODY IS VERY COMPLETE FROM RADIATOR TO COWL, BUT WHAT YOU SEE IN PHOTOS IS WHAT YOU WILL GET, ( MAYBE MORE, BUT NO LESS).
LOCOMOBILE COMPANY OF AMERICA FURNISHED A CHASSIS TO ITS'' CUSTOMERS, AND THEN SENT A TEAM OF SIX MEN TO A CONTRACTED COACH BUILDER. WHERE THEY WOULD FINISH IT TO CUSTOMER SPECS.. EACH LOCOMOBILE BODY IS BASICALLY A VARIATION OF A STANDARD LOCO FACTORY DESIGN. THEREFORE, THIS CAR CHASSIS IS TECHNICALLY CORRECT FOR FITMENT OF A VARIETY OF BODY STYLES. LOCOMOBILE BODIES WERE FABRICATED OUT OF ALUMINUM ALLOY ATTACHED ONTO WOODEN FRAMING.
LOCOMOBILE CHASSIS LARGELY INCORPORATED DESIGNS PATENTED BY THE STANLEY BROTHERS (STANLEY STEAMER). EVERY MODEL OF LOCOMOBILE PRIOR TO 1922 IS NOW DESIGNATED A CCCA FULL CLASSIC CAR...
THIS IS NOT A BARN FIND. I PURCHASED IT FOR BIG BUCKS AT A MARSHALS SALE IN 1991. IT HAD BEEN SEIZED FROM THE DRUG KINGPIN WHO RETAINED IT IN HIS MASSIVE CAR COLLECTION. IT COMES WITH A GOVERNMENT TITLE.. I'M GUESSING ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BODY STYLE, BUT MOST LIKELY IT BEGAN LIFE AS A FOUR DOOR CAR. WHEN I BOUGHT IT, IT HAD ALREADY BEEN POORLY RESTORED AND REBODIED INTO A SPEEDSTER
NOTE THAT I FOUND THE CLUTCH PLATES STUCK FROM SITTING AFTER THE CONFISCATION. I CLEANED SOME SURFACE RUST FROM THEM, HOWEVER, THE CLUTCH WAS NEVER RE-INSTALLED. IT IS SEEN SITTING ON THE CHASSIS IN MY PHOTOS. I THINK A PROFESSIONAL BODY BUILDER COULD TURN THIS INTO A BEAUTY. NICE LOCOMOBILES COULD SELL INTO SIX FIGURES. THIS CARS CURRENT VALUE CAN ONLY BE DETERMINED BY THE CURRENT MARKET, SO PLEASE DON;T BE RUDE AND/OR BULLY ME ABOUT MY PRICING.. SEND ME YOUR REASONABLE OFFERS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS, I'M NOT IN ANY WAY DESPERATE TO GIVE THE CAR AWAY.
THE CHASSIS UNDERCARRIAGE WAS RECENTLY CLEANED AND PAINTED. THE CHASSIS SPRINGS, STEERING APPEARS SOLID AND TIGHT
THE PRICE THAT ESTABLISHES THE WINNING BID IS THE PRICE TO BE PAID, NO MORE OR NO LESS. NO HAGGLING, REFUNDS. TRADES, LAYWAYS, OR DISCOUNTS. SO LOOK AT THE PHOTOS CAREFULLY PRIOR TO BIDDING, E-MAIL WITH QUESTIONS. WINNING BIDDERMUST PAY THROUGH PAYPAL. BIDDERS HAVE THE BUY IT NOW OPTION.SINCE CAR IS FOR SALE LOCALLY. I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO END THE AUCTION EARLY IN THE EVENT OF A LOCAL SALE. IMMEDIATE NON-REFUNDABLE DUE FROM WINNER WHEN AUCTION ENDS.
