Morgan
Plus 4, 1961
Two owners since
new, 57, 000 original miles
A
remarkably well preserved car...purchased in England in 1961 by Canadian NATO
officer, brought back to Ontario, stored for years, sold to second owner in
1973, at that time: stripped to bare
metal, repainted, engine completely overhauled (new pistons, bores, bottom end, cylinder head, etc.). .has covered around 10, 000 since.
Incredibly, with forty two year old paint, no bubbling, no blistering, no cracks on top of
the fenders (a common Morgan flaw), still absolutely stunning. Original chrome is also incredibly well
preserved...note crank hole in front bumper, reproductions don't have this
little detail.
Did a
compression test. .155-160 psi in every cylinder, 50-60 psi oil pressure when
warm, zero smoke cold or hot, smooth and powerful. The best Moss gearbox I have ever
encountered...surprisingly good synchromesh, quiet in first and reverse gears, steering is light and precise, great ride, an absolute dream to drive (and
having owned more than two hundred Morgans, over the past 42 years, driving
this car was like a revelation).
Interior
was just redone, leather seats, door tops, center trans cover, matching vinyl
door and side panels, rubber matting. Just like the day it was built. Excellent wood dashboard and very well preserved original creme faced
gauges. Top appears to be fairly new
and is in excellent condition, new Stafast cloth tonneau, very good original
side curtains. Even has its original
heater.
Last
owner told me the brakes were rebuilt (discs in front) and they seem to work
properly. Front end seems very tight, completely rewired, has a fairly new stainless steel factory muffler, tires are
fine, battery new, starts instantly, runs flawlessly.
If you
are not entirely familiar with Morgans, I think the 1959-1962 Plus 4s are
amongst the best. .1959 being the first year of disc brakes, 1962 being the
last year of the classic creme faced gauges. Should hit over 105 mph top speed, easy cruising at 80-90 mph, great
handling, and if you think these cars are just 'slow driving cars around the
neighborhood classics, ' the next year, 1962, a Morgan Plus 4 won the
competitive under 2 liter GT class at the 24 hours of LeMans beating the
factory Porsche and Alfa teams. And 10th
overall!
Doors
close and latch like new, wood framing appears to be excellent, same with frame
and exterior sheet metal, has new seat belts, easy to fit a luggage rack, stereo/CD, even folding windshield brackets. With the Morgan Motor Company still alive and kicking in England, in production since 1910, and with
plenty of authorized Morgan dealers in the USA, keeping a 1961 Morgan running
is effortless and not very expensive. The engine is a stock Triumph TR3A and the Moss gearbox and Salisbury back axle are
capable of taking three times the power.
What is
best about owning and driving a Morgan is the wonderful blend of ancient
engineering...the front suspension was patented in 1910, the chassis design
dates from the mid 1930s, same with the engine, and the SU carbs date from
1905. With over 100hp, tons of torque, a
curb weight of around 1850 pounds, disc brakes, this car has contemporary
performance in the 21st century.
Steel
chassis, Belgian ash wood body framing, wood floors, and wrapped up in the beautiful
bodywork.
This
particular car really defines the term 'survivor' as it has been garaged its
entire life, only seen two owners, and has incredibly low original
mileage. Best of all, it looks the part
and runs and drives like a brand new car.

It has not been on the
market since 1973 and epitomizes the term 'a real gem.' Thanks for looking, and good luck.
