Offered here is an original, rare, circa 1905 New York Pre State Leather License plate in untouched original condition.  The plate is made of very thick white leather (black leather on back) that is stitched over and around  a metal inner plate with attached aluminum letters.  The plate bears the number 4809 NY and measures approx. 13 long and 5 1/2″ from top to bottom not including hanger clips. The plate has not been cleaned or restored and is just as found. The white leather has darkened and discolored from exposure and honest use. It has taken on an attractive alligatoring to the surfaces of the leather. There is some minor loss to the corners which can be seen in the photos. One of the metal clips is missing its spring closure, and both have a short piece of  rusted baling wire which likely dates from the time the plate was in use. This is a rare and early plate. (see all photos) It is offered with no hidden reserve and a low starting bid. Three-day inspection/return on all items, if not as described.
