The Shelby Cobra
289 FIA/USRRC
were the most
successful and celebrated racing Cobras of all time. There were 16 of these
original FIA serpents built by Carroll Shelby, all in 1964. Five went to Europe
to compete in FIA racing events [FYI, FIA stands for Federation
Internationale de l'Automobile, headquartered in Paris]. Six were raced by
the Factory Team in the United States Road Race
ChampionshipSeries, and five were sold to private parties.
For that year (1964), the 289 Cobras
swept both racing circuits—in
Europe and here in the US. This glistening 289 roadster #2103 is an almost
precise replica of the FIAs raced in the U.S. The coachwork, undercar exhaust, forward-facing 3rd-leg rollbar, LeMans gas filler and Halibrand pin-drive
wheels are salient examples of its purity. Only 3 of the original cars had the
(FIA-mandated) trunk dimples and they were raced in Europe on the FIA circuit.
The remaining 13 cars never had those trunk dimples. The USRRC cars
also had the traditional dash, like this breathtaking example.
Others had a drop-center dash.
The car being offered is eminently
drivable. Brought to you by ERA's Old World–style craftsmen in New
Britain, Connecticut. ERA has developed an excellent
adjustable suspension system and frame that is much stiffer/more-rigid than the
originals'. Also, steering and handling is nimble, smooth and effortless. These
are some of the distinguishing marks of the ERA marque.
This beauty boasts a crate motor from
Engine Factory in NJ, 302 cubic inches of displacement [using a single Edelbrock
650 carburetor] and delivers 375 hp. It's been driven less than 4000
miles, never raced. The entire car was built as a decommissioned
1965 United States Road Race Championship Cobra and is the
prettiest girl at the dance.
I'm the second owner of the car but it's been babied by both of us. These are the original specs and details from the build in late 2005. I have to sell due to a relocation.
