This TR4A is absolutely beautiful. It has one of the straightest bodies on a TR4
I’ve ever seen. It’s obviously always
been garaged. I bought it from someone
in the Palm Springs
area who purchased it about ten years ago. During that ten years of ownership, he drove it as is for a few years, then spent well over thirty thousand dollars in restoration. I have receipts he provided to prove
that. Once you see what’s been done, it’ll
become obvious that he didn’t cut any corners. He put only about ten thousand miles on the car during the time he owned
it, including before restoration was started. Most of restoration was begun
within the last five years, including the engine rebuild and paint, which both
were professionally done. I took it to a local car show two months ago and won
first place out of about 40 cars. Of course, we’re not talking the
concourse show at Pebble Beach , but there were a
lot of very nice car restorations that this Triumph had to compete with, and it
still came out on top.
Interior and Cosmetically
In
a word, just gorgeous. Replaced wood
dash that shines brilliantly, way better than the original TR4A dash. No cracks or blemishes on the dash pad.
Gauges clean and all working. Incredibly, also an original working Triumph AM
radio. New seat upholstery with red piping, perfect rubber floor panels. One small fault is the drivers side door rail
upholstery (top of door where you would rest your arm if the window is open) is
cracked in a couple places, but I bought a new replacement. I may install the new one before selling, but
if I don’t get to it, the new one is included with sale. A bit of wear I noticed on the carpet under
the handbrake. To me, that points to an
earlier replacement than the rest of the interior. Otherwise it’s just awesome. The rest of the carpet looks great. Door panels look brand new. Other than what I’ve mentioned I believe
you’ll be hard pressed to find fault with the interior.
Under the hood
Engine
was professionally and totally rebuilt at a cost of over $7K. That includes new pistons, piston sleeves, valves, valve springs and camshaft, along with all the other things a quality
engine rebuild should include. Other
items consist of Stromberg carbs rebuilt, new water pump, radiator, generator, regulator, all hoses, PCV, heater control, thermostat, engine mounts, exhaust completely
replaced from front to rear, clutch master cylinder, horns, wiper motor, and an
electric fuel pump designed specifically for this car that mounts where the
original mechanical fuel pump bolted on. The new electric fuel pump, not original, is a modern upgrade that
enables the car to start quickly even after sitting for months. Also has new flywheel and clutch kit. Tranny
had a couple bearings replaced and new seals installed. The car starts fast, with no knocks, noises or smoke, and runs cool always, even in hot weather. No overheating issues or starting problems.
Drive Train and Suspension
New
suspension bushings front and rear, all new brakes, rotors on the front, calipers, suspension arm and 6 new u-joints for the IRS and driveshaft. New springs in the rear, with shocks all the
way around. The tires have about 4K
miles on them and look great. It has new
chrome wire wheels and knockoffs. They
are chrome reproductions from Moss Motors and all are new including the one in
the trunk (about $2500 cost for just the wire wheels). Previous owner told me he also replaced the
rack and pinion for the steering, but I didn’t find a receipt. Judging by the way it drives, tight and true, with no vibrations, wandering, pulling, rattling or shaking, and no play at all
in the steering wheel, even at high freeway speeds, I tend to believe him.
Brakes are new and don’t pull either. It
stops straight, even with hands off the wheel. This car is a delight to drive with no excuses.
Electrical
Everything
works great, both inside the car and out. All gauges, horn, turn signals, emergency flashers, heater fan, dash
gauge lights, dash warning lights, outside side running lights, wipers, radio, headlights, tail lamps, side marker lamps, brake lights, license plate
lights…everything!
Body and paint
It
was professionally repainted for show quality about six years ago at a cost of
over $8K in the car's original color of Signal Red. Both doors, all four
fenders, hood, windshield frame and trunk were removed and painted
individually. All screws, bolts, rubber parts and seals were replaced for
reassembly, so you don’t have all the overspray, painted over parts, and
improper masking most repaints have. It was color sanded and buffed afterward
to remove any orange peel to give it a show finish. It appears to me that
the inside of fenders and most of the under-carriage has been undercoated to
prevent any possible future issues regarding rust. Previous owner told me
that the inside of the trunk and the engine compartment were not repainted, since the condition of the existing paint was so nice that it would be better
to just clean them up, which they did. The trunk has a few existing minor
scratches, but the engine compartment seems close to pristine. There were
two very small chips in the paint on the exterior (about the size of a pencil
eraser) that I discovered and touched up...one on the windshield frame and one
on the right rear fender near the tail light. Other than those, which I
believe are now fine, I feel the paint to be very close to as good as it gets.
You would have to look very closely to see any imperfections. The
advantage of an older finish that’s been taken care of is that nothing can be hidden…
nothing fresh from the paint shop that may be covering up poor bodywork or
other concerns. All chrome, glass, lenses, side strips, grill, and more are in very good to as-new
condition. The original TR4A badge on the hood looks a little faded, but
it’s original, and I have a new replacement replica badge if you wish to put it
on. A simple task.
The Top and Covers
The
top looks almost new. Canvas looks
great, and no discoloration in window panels. Center window has a couple small areas that almost look like a couple of
small inch long streaks of white paint. I hesitate to even mention it because they’re such small and vague
imperfections that I didn’t notice them when I first examined the top. The car
also includes both a fairly new split-type tonneau cover and a boot cover for
driving while the top is down (see photos).
All
that being said, this TR4A drives very smoothly and runs extremely well, looks
beautiful, and has been meticulously cared for. It’s known as one of the most well built and reliable British cars of
its class ever conceived, yet with much more power and torque than its close
British cousin of the era, the MG. Other
than a ‘trailer queen’ at more than $50K I'm certain you’ll never find a nicer
and more cared for TR4A than this beauty.
This
TR4A should not be expected to be flawless, but I do believe it's
exceptional. If you go through the
receipts, you’ll find many, many more improvements and replacements than I’ve
mentioned. Anything knowingly needed has
been done. Whoever ends up with this
car, in my opinion, should experience many thousands of miles of the fun and
trouble-free driving of a restored classic English roadster. There isn’t
anything known to make it more so or it would have been done.
You’ll
find that this car attracts a lot of attention. Other drivers are commonly giving a smile and a thumbs up, stopping by
the gas station for a fill-up nearly always will invite a friendly conversation
from fellow admirers, and please do take it to your local car show, where it
will always be an appreciated and worthy participant.
Payment
terms: $500 deposit due via PayPal or bank wire transfer on or before 2 days
from close of auction. Balance due on or
before 7 days from close of auction via bank wire transfer of funds. There are many classic car transporters out
there, both locally, nationally and for overseas shipping, but I’m not familiar
with them all, so the buyer should be responsible for choosing one. Just do a simple search on the internet and
look for reviews. If there is anything I
can do to help with the logistics of shipping, please feel free to ask.
Thank
you for your interest in this fine classic automobile.
