This 1961 VW Panelvan has just undergone a complete
restoration. This was one of 96 VW microbuses used by the “Jewel Tea Company” in the
60’s/70’s. (see the historical pictures) They were unique from the factory with
safari windows, swivel seat, gas heater, and sliding rear window. This bus is one of only a few known to
still exist. It retains safari
windows and a swivel seat. Most
everything mechanical on the bus has either been replaced or restored. The bus
underwent some metal work, but most of the bus (including the cargo floors, front floors, battery tray and long rocker) did not need any welding! This
panel is powered by a fresh 1600 dual port motor, with an aftermarket
header/quiet pack exhaust. The bus runs and stops great, tracks straight down
the road, and all electric works (including wipers).

Some notes: The bus came to me having had previous bodywork
and a paint job (wrong color). I
replaced the inner and outer rocker underneath the cargo doors, welded in
proper tail light holes, and fixed some of the bodywork that needed it. The front most cargo door sticks out a
bit at the bottom (with the new seals installed). The shifting is a bit stiff, but once you are used to it
there is no problem. If you have driven an early bus then you know that they
are finicky shifters. The swivel
seat has been fabricated from split window rails and a bay window passenger
seat & swivel. The cover/pad
is a bit loose on there, but I think it looks fine. Original metal is included in case the new owner locates the
period correct split window swivel seat. The bus runs, drives, stops, and all electric works. I did very little underneath, except
cables and brakes, as the steering is tight and the suspension feels good. The bus was
undercoated early on, and it has really preserved the bus. There was some of this coating in the
cargo area, but I wire brushed off as much as I could before it was painted. The front safari window glass has some
sort of light pitting on them, but this is not very noticeable or distracting.
It is the buyer’s responsibility to see the bus in person
and to verify all the information in this listing. I am very flexible with buyers coming to see the bus. Sacramento (SMF), Oakland (OAK), and
San Francisco (SFO) are all within about 1 hour from my house. If I have time, I can pick you up (SMF
preferred- 45 minutes from here) to bring you to the bus.
I am available between 8am-9pm PST for calls. Texts and
emails come to me instantly and I can reply much quicker. Bus is located in Vacaville, CA 95687
and the port of Oakland is about 45 minutes from here.
I have sold many buses to overseas buyers, and can make the
experience very quick and easy! References and restoration pictures available
