MGB
V8 Special, 1980
A comprehensive project I finished, tested, enjoyed
and then (damn!) found a Morgan I prefer to own.
Starter with a 28, 000
original 1977 MGB, fitted with a rebuilt highly modified 3.9 liter all aluminum
Rover V8 engine (from a Triumph TR8)….balanced, blueprinted, high lift
camshaft, special JWR intake manifold, ported heads, new 4bbl carb (these specs
given to me by the last owner), reputed around 300hp, coupled to a Rover 5
speed transmission. Beautiful
installation, no banging or vibration, works perfectly. Was also told it has an MGC 3.08 back
axle…..from my few hundred miles of driving, found this: 55 psi oil pressure when hot, runs cool, no
rattles, shifts smoothly, no smoke ever, incredibly fast when one steps on it, very high geared in 5th…..smooth and blindingly fast, one can feel the engine
‘come on the cam’ at 3, 000 rpm….all of the original gauges were connected and
work properly.
Repainted over the original
faded paint (no damage, no bondo, no repairs), and nicely detailed in the
engine bay. New thicker radiator core
with high output cooling fans, FOUR WHEEL disc brakes with power assist, front
and rear sway bars, thicker front bar, polyurethane bushings, etc.
Lowered to pre 1974 ½ ride
height, a complete professional chrome bumper conversion, all new chrome and
trim, the result is a gorgeous MGB.
Since the alloy V8 weighs 40
pounds
less
than the original cast iron MGB four cylinder engine, steering is light and precise giving the car superb balance, ride, and
handling.
Has knock off hubs and can
offer this car as pictured with an expensive set of knock off Minilite style
wheels or painted/chrome wire wheels. A
new owner’s choice
Did a very lavish interior……custom
made wood dash and wood steering wheel, tan leather seats, new panels and
carpets, the rest of the console and dash professionally dyed (by a local guy
who generally does Ferraris for the local dealer) to match. And an expensive tan cloth top and tonneau.
3” racing belts, proper V8
badges, stereo/CD with USB input, nicely painted and detailed trunk, hood and
trunk lid hydraulic struts, and lots of other small details.
I spent a small fortune on
this car. Have seen a lot of V8
conversions but while the mechanics are often done well, the rest has a basic
‘hot rod look’ with cheap looking dashboards, seats, interiors and often ugly
rubber bumpers and ungainly raised ride height. This car was done on a completely different level….and not as a ‘boy
racer’ but as a sophisticated high performance classic sports car with
incredibly flexibility and performance. Even with fantastic brakes and improved cooling and suspension.
(and when I finished the car, found a Morgan I wanted for my collection, hence this car being offered for
sale)
