1979 Pontiac Trans Am WS6

Pontiac Trans Am WS6 (1979)
for sale

Price: US $10,900.00

Description:

Up for sale today is my very cool '79 Trans Am WS6! This unique car combines the survivor look that is so popular today, along with a stout drivetrain that was built with serious track duty in mind. It started life as a rare 400/4 speed coupe with the WS6 and W72 packages. It is Nocturne Blue with the light blue Deluxe Hobnail interior. The original drivetrain was replaced by a 411ci, Ram Air IV-headed Pontiac motor by SD Performance, a Tremec TKO transmission, and a built 8.5 rear end. Full details of the build are shown below. This car runs extremely strong and has been very reliable for the three years I have owned it. I originally bought it for occasional trips to the drag strip, but have only made it to the track twice in three years. At this point I'm not getting much use out of the car and it just lost its garage space to my wife's new Vette, so it's time for someone else to enjoy it.
The car was previously featured in High Performance Pontiac's Pavement Pounders Shootout, and the article talks about the dragstrip performance. There is also some info on the engine build at SD Performance's web site. If the links don't work you can Google search Mark Doyal Trans Am and click the first couple links that come up. Mark was the previous owner, but I haven't changed anything on the car other than replacing the worn out mufflers and fixing up the interior a little bit. The engine build was done in 2001 (see last couple of pics of the invoice from SD) but it is still running great with no issues.

Please note that this car was primarily built for drag and autocross use. It was built to run on pump gas and I do drive it on the street frequently, including some 50+ mile trips in 100 degree heat, but most people would not consider it very streetable. It has a long-duration, solid flat tappet cam. It is very loud, has a choppy idle, the clutch is heavy, and it has limited low-end torque due to the size of the cam. The A/C is not installed, the compressor/condenser/ brackets are all missing, and the blower motor needs to be replaced. The car does pass Texas state inspections without a problem, and is currently tagged and inspected.
I strongly recommend that serious buyers look at the car in person. I will be happy to take you for a test ride. Please call George at 361-537-7704 to make an appointment, or if you have any questions about the car. It is located in Spring Branch, TX which is about 25 miles North of San Antonio.
Mileage is showing 36, 120 which previous owner claimed is actual. I have no way to verify this. It does seem like a low-mileage car considering the minimal wear on the interior, and how well the doors open and close. Mileage will go up slightly due to test drives.
Full details of the car:
Body:
Overall it is very straight and rust free. It appears to be all original sheet metal with no accident damage evident. The doors open and close very well and do not sag. The panel gaps and spoiler alignment are above average. It has not been cut up at all, with the exception of some holes drilled in the trunk floor for the battery relocation, kill switch, and a nitrous bottle bracket. Front and rear glass is good, side windows have some scratches from going up and down.
Paint:
Appears to be original. It is very thin and faded with primer showing in numerous places, and bare metal in a few spots. Decals are pretty much intact but are faded, and the hood bird is starting to bubble. See the pictures for more detail, I took close ups of the worst spots. I actually receive numerous compliments on the original look, so I have never wanted to repaint it. However, it will need to be garaged or covered to prevent further deterioration. Or you could try to spray clear coat over it like they do on Fast and Loud.
Interior:
Overall is in nice presentable condition, but not show quality. Dash is original and free of cracks. A protective dash mat has been installed to protect it from the sun. Gauge cluster looks great, original tach has been disconnected and there is an aftermarket tach attached to the steering column. Additional gauges have been added in place of two of the A/C vents (Fuel Pressure and Water Temp). Seats are original with no rips, but they have some fading on the top from sun exposure. Door panels are original and look pretty good. Console is original and is in fair condition with a few scratches and some aftermarket speaker grills on the sides. Headliner, carpet, and package tray have been replaced with new aftermarket pieces. The driver's power window works well, passenger side motor works but the window likes to get stuck in the up position, power locks work sometimes. A Retrosound stereo has been installed and it has aux, USB, and SD card inputs for hooking up an iPod or equivalent. It is functional although sound quality isn't great. I prefer to listen to the engine!
Engine:
Built by SD Performance, which is one of the premier Pontiac shops. The last couple pics show the invoice from SD for close to $9, 000. Cost to duplicate this motor today would be over $11K.
1973 Pontiac 400 block, 4.155 bore x 3.79 stroke, 411 ci, Ross pistons dished for 9.5:1 compression, Eagle forged rods, stock 400 crank (offset ground .040 and cut to BBC rod journal size), 4 bolt steel main caps.
Dyno tested at 515 HP @6, 400 RPM/503 Ft-lbs at 4, 800 RPM according to the writeup on the SD Performance web site. I have not dynoed it personally.
Heads are 1969 Ram Air IV, casting #722, ported by SD Performance to flow 292 cfm intake, 215 cfm exhaust.
Other features include a Torker II Intake, HP 950 carb, Comp Cams solid flat tappet, 256/260 duration at .050, .597/.610 lift, roller rockers, Nunzi 1-3/4 headers, Dr. Gas X-pipe, 3 exhaust all the way back over the axle, Flowmaster 40 series mufflers, Proform HEI with an Accel 300+ ignition box, 10.8mm plug wires, heavy duty aluminum radiator, Canton Road Race oil pan, remote oil filter setup using 2 HP-4 filters, Mallory Comp 140 fuel pump with return-style regulator and -8AN braided line.
Drivetrain:
Tremec TKO 5-speed manual (the original 3550 based unit, not the new TKO600), Lakewood SFI scattershield, Hayes 11 street/strip clutch, heavy duty Denny's driveshaft, driveshaft safety loop, 8.5 disc brake rear end with Moser Axles, Auburn posi, 3.73 gears. Wheels are 15 x 8 Snowflakes and have been widened to 15 x 10 in back. Tires are BFG Radial TA's 275/50/15 front and 295/50/15 back. Posi works well, transmission shifts very smooth, clutch is still strong. Wheels could stand to be blasted and re-painted. Tires have plenty of tread left, but they are old and should be replaced. Brakes are stock 10.9 WS6 4-wheel discs.
Other mods:
Weld-in subframe connectors, traction bars, car lowered by cutting 1 coil off the front springs and relocating spring eyes 3/4 in rear, battery is relocated to trunk, kill switch installed in the license plate area.
Terms of auction:
$500 deposit due within 48 hours of auction close, balance within 7 days. Payment via Paypal is OK for depost. Balance to paid by wire transfer or cash in person. If paying by check, the car will not be released until the check clears. Bidders with zero feedback please contact me before bidding. Again, my name is George and my number is 361-537-7704. You can call or text me.
Shipping:
Buyer is responsible for shipping arrangements and payment. I am willing to help load the car, or drive it to a local shipping terminal. I do not have any experience shipping cars but will try to help out if needed. I can also pick you up at the San Antonio airport if you want to fly in and drive the car home. As mentioned above, the car has always been reliable but the tires are old and not necessarily safe for a long trip.
